biology class note- cardiac cycle

1. When atria contracts, ventricles relax and blood enters.

2. After a short pause, when ventricles contract because of the ventricles pressure, both AV valves
will close making ‘lub’ sound. The semi-lunar valves open forcing blood from right ventricle to
pulmonary artery and from left ventricle to the aorta
3. When ventricle contracts, the atria relaxes. The right atrium receives blood from the venae cavae
while the left atrium receives blood from the pulmonary veins
4. When the ventricles relax, the fall in pressure causes the semi-lunar valves to close which prevents
backflow of blood. This produces ‘dub’ sound. The AV valves open and blood flows from the atria
into the ventricles.
5. The atria contracts again and the whole cycle repeats.
