Foreword

The preparation of this Published Document (PD) was entrusted to Technical

Committee GW/1, Electronic security systems. It is a result of the Open Forum held
on 6 October 1998 at BSI on European Standards for alarms.
A series of European Standards for intruder alarm systems is being produced which
will eventually replace a number of British Standards for intruder alarm systems. Some
European Standards in the series have been published, others are in draft format, and
work has not started on the remainder. Once the whole series of European Standards
has been published, BSI will be required to withdraw conflicting British Standards. The
date for such a withdrawal has yet to be established.
There is growing pressure from a number of organizations that represent security
companies to begin installing intruder alarm systems in accordance with those
European Standards already published. This is creating problems for both the security
companies and the inspectorates of intruder alarm systems, as some fundamental
requirements for intruder alarm systems will be included in European Standards not
yet published.
This Published Document has been drawn up to enable users and insurance
companies to specify, and security companies to install, intruder alarm systems to
those parts of the European Standards which are already published and to those
European Standards which exist in a mature draft form.
The publication of this PD does not imply that use of the European Standards is
mandatory. Its intent is to enable the published European Standards and draft
standards to be applied in a controlled and consistent way across the industry, where
specifiers and installers choose to use them as an alternative to the relevant British
Standards.
Systems may be installed in accordance with British Standards (i.e. BS 4737
and BS 7042), or in accordance with the European Standards defined in this PD.
The scheme does not apply to wire-free intruder alarm systems, which should continue
to be installed in accordance with BS 6799 and DD 244.
The scheme does not apply to exterior intruder alarm systems, which should continue
to be installed in accordance with BS 4737-4.3:1998.
The scheme does not apply to exterior deterrent systems, which should continue to be
installed in accordance with DD 231.
The scheme does not apply to systems consisting only of deliberately operated
devices (DODs), which should continue to be installed in accordance with BS 4737-2.
The scheme described in this PD is an interim scheme based on currently available
European Standards. This PD will be reviewed when new European Standards are
published. It is therefore anticipated that new editions of the PD, or amendments to it,
will be published from time to time.
This publication does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract.
Users of this document are responsible for its correct application.
This Published Document is not to be regarded as a British Standard.

Summary of pages
