Grade Level 8th Grade

Learning Objective STANDARD CE.1i

The student will demonstrate skills for historical thinking,
geographical analysis, economic decision making, and
responsible citizenship by
i) applying civic virtue and democratic principles to make
collaborative decisions;

Essential Understandings
Civic virtue is the cultivation of habits of personal living that are
viewed as important for the success of the community. Examples
include but are not limited to:
 Voting
 Volunteering
 Organizing a community group
 Attending a city or school board meeting
Collaboration is necessary in order to be an effective learner and
citizen.

The students will learn how to make educational choices and how those
choices might affect the voting process and your future government.
The manipulatives have many different outcomes depending on choices
made and deciding what issues are important to the student. The
outcomes will differ each time depending on if you ask questions at
town hall meetings, show what a ballot may look like, help a student to
form their opinion of who they would like to vote for. This simulation
will also teach student some of the potential hot topics for discussion in
real elections in the future.
Pedagogy

Online Activity This simulation will have you make choices about who you
would like to vote for in elections. After making those choices,
it can potentially walk you through important issues, town
meetings, and up until the day of the Primary Election in an
attempt to educate the voter on the issues at hand. Along with
that, you will decide what issues are important to you and
which candidate values those issues. Depending on the topics
you choose and who you choose to vote for, the process will
vary. You may have options to ask questions about the
important issues you chose to see which candidate has your
future vote. You can compare which candidates said the things
you wanted to hear. This is a continuous game until the point
of the final Election Day where students can cast their ballot
with their educated decision on who to vote for.
