PORT

A port is a maritime facility which may comprise one or more wharves where
ships may dock to load and discharge passengers and cargo. Although usually
situated on a sea coast or estuary, some ports, such
as Hamburg, Manchester and Duluth, are many miles inland, with access to the
sea via river or canal.
A port is a place where international shipping either originates, terminates or
transits.

PROBLEMS of CHATTOGRAM PORT

According to experts, a port’s efficiency mainly depends on the development of three

infrastructural facilities –
1. jetties,
2. yards and
3. instruments.
There are 19 jetties in the port, where 15-16 vessels can berth every day, making a
number of vessels wait at the outer anchorage that led to extra cost for the businesses
and creating risk of vessel accidents
 In the last 12 years, the CPA did not buy any gantry cranes. Earlier in 2005, it
purchased four gantry cranes, of which two are not operating since June,2018
following an accident.

PROBLEMS of CHATTOGRAM PORT

 Limitation of authoritative power of the CPA Management Board to make the port
related decision independently.
 The port has a limited draft of 9.14 meter for which entrance of vessels over 20,000
dwt is restricted.
 Because of lack of infrastructure facilities, a long time is required for the
transportation of containerized cargoes.
 Only about 10% of the containerized cargoes can be transported by railways to
Dhaka ICD.
 Still no containers are transported by roads and inland waterways to the other
parts of the country.

PORT INFRASTUCTURE INDEX

The Quality of Port Infrastructure measures business executives' perception of their country's port
facilities. Data are from the World Economic Forum's Executive Opinion Survey, conducted for 30
years in collaboration with 150 partner institutes. The 2009 round included more than 13,000
respondents from 133 countries. Sampling follows a dual stratification based on company size and
the sector of activity. Data are collected online or through in-person interviews. Responses are
aggregated using sector-weighted averaging. The data for the latest year are combined with the data
for the previous year to create a two-year moving average. Scores range from 1 (port infrastructure
considered extremely underdeveloped) to 7 (port infrastructure considered efficient by international
standards). Respondents in landlocked countries were asked how accessible are port facilities (1 =
extremely inaccessible; 7 = extremely accessible).
