Shopping
The Lijnbaan is the most famous shopping
street in Rotterdam. As soon as World War II
ended, Rotterdam started rebuilding; air, light
and space were the watchwords. In 1954, the
Lijnbaan was completed and Europe’s first
pedestrian-only shopping street had become
a reality. Lijnbaan, Beursplein and Beurstra-

straat and Kruiskade has various shops of-
fering an exclusive collection of high-quality
foreign brands. There are also a number of
stylish boutiques on Oude Binnenweg, with
its lovely and nostalgic buildings.

For lighter pursuits,

every night’s a party in the cafés
that line the Stadhuisplein.

Entertainment
Tip
Nightlife and entertainment in the Lijnbaank-
wartier are varied and versatile. The district is
home to the major concert halls of Rotterdam.
Classical music, jazz and world music are per-
formed in De Doelen, e.g. in the prominent Ger-
giev Festival. The Rotterdamse Schouwburg of-

as opera and dance, including performances
by such Rotterdam-based companies as the RO

with international allure. Katendrecht, also
known as the Cape, was home to one of Eu-

embankments, until the 1980s the area was
best known as a ‘notorious’ neighbourhood.
