B.Tech VI Semester
Subject: Chemical Process Equipment Design-I (Mech. Aspects) Subj. Code: CL20614CL
Time: 9.00 AM to 3.00 PM 20-7-2020 Max. Marks: 40
(Weightage 50%)
Note: Notes:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Answer should be brief and to the point.
3. Assume suitable data if any data is missing,
4. Support your answer with neat diagram wherever necessary
5. Send Single PDF file at the end of exam. Containing Roll No. on Each Page. All the pages must be in proper sequence
in PDF. PDF file must be properly readable,
6. It will be your responsible in case of unreadable file.

I (i) Brief the complete fabrication methods? 4

(ii) Describe different types of head and closures along with neat diagram? 4

II Design a storage tank having a capacity of 6050 kL of a liquid having a specific gravity of 8
1.3. The tank has a conical roof supported on girder and rafter. Present the detail design of
the vessel when the design temperature is 300 oC and the material used for shell
construction is IS 2041-1962 20Mn2. Density of the material is 7850 kg/m 3. Determine
the height of the main and the supporting column, E=19000 kgf/mm 2. Consider plate
width of 2 m, Joint Efficiency 85%, corrosion allowance 1.5 mm, Imposed load 250
kg/m2 and rolled steel channel

III Describe the design steps of Internal and External pressure vessel assuming torispherical 8
head on both end.
IV Design a tall vessel having 3 m OD and 20 m in height rests over a skirt support of 5 m in 8
height. Diameter of skirt is equal to the diameter of column. Consider OD of shell as
mean diameter of insulation. The vessel has following specifications: Design Temperature
320 oC; Design Pressure 0.9 MN/m2;Allowable stress 150 MN/m2 ; MOC IS 2002-1962 G
2B; Corrosion allowance 2 mm; Joint efficiency factor 85%; Density of shell material 80
kN/m2 ; Density of insulation material 7.84 kN/m2 ; thickness of insulation 75 mm; tray
spacing 850 mm; weir height all tray 75 mm; tray loading excluding liquid 1 kN/m 2 of
tray area; weight of ladder 365 N/m; Weight of each head 8.5 kN; Assume K 1 = 0.7, K2 =
1, area with moderate wind, one caged ladder, neglect seismic force.
V (i) A horizontal vessel with 1.0 m diameter and 5.5 m total length is supported on 4
saddle supports. The vessel is closed at two end by elliptical heads with major to
minor axis ratio 2.0. Distance of saddle centre line from shell end (A) is 0.21 m.
Weight of the vessel with all its contents is 7000 kg. Calculate the bending moment
induced and the stresses induced in the vessel. Consider permissible stress of the
material is 1060 kg/cm2, shell thickness 9 mm and allowable pressure 1.5 kg/cm 2.

(ii) Determine the necessary wall thickness by various failure theories. Shell ID 0.3 m
with the internal pressure of 100 MN/m2. The material is mild steel with a yield 4
point of steel 480 N/mm2. Assuming an efficiency of the longitudinal welded joint to
be 75%, Poisson ratio of material 0.3 and a factor of safety of 2. Value of K must be
taken upto three decimal point.
