1. Draw a network diagram and answer the questions below:
(Please show all your workings or explanation; simple answers alone will not
account for full marks)

 Activity 1 can start immediately and has an estimated duration of three weeks.
 Activity 2 can start after activity 1 is completed and has an estimated duration of
three weeks.
 Activity 3 can start after activity 1 is completed and has an estimated duration of
six weeks.
 Activity 4 can start after activity 2 is completed and has an estimated duration of
eight weeks.
 Activity 5 can start after activity 4 is completed and after activity 3 is completed.
This activity takes four weeks.

The Tabular form of the above network diagram question:

Activity Predecessor Duration of

weeks

1 -- 3

2 1 3

3 1 6

4 2 8

5 4,3 4

Network Diagram

 Earliest Start Time of the activity (EST) = Early Finish of activity.

 Latest Finish Time of the activity (LFT) = Late Finish of activity.
 Early Finish Time (EFT) = EST + Duration.
 Late Start Time (LST) = LFT – Duration.
 And here we are considering Activity as “A” and Duration as “D”.
EST A EFT
LST D LFT

Take ES of A1 = 0 float=0 float =0

3 A2 6 6 A4 14 Total = 18wk
Float =0 3 3 6 6 8 14
0 A1 3 14 A5 18
14 4 18 Finish
Start 3 3 3
Float = 8-3 =5 float =0
3 A3 9
8 6 14
Here the critical path is A1A2A4A5 =18 weeks

The above network diagram has two paths.

1. A1 A2 A4A5 = 18weeks. here we got the total duration of path by adding
the duration of all activities such as A1, A2, A4, A5 (3 + 3 + 8 + 4) = 18.

2. A1A3A5 = 13 weeks by adding duration of three activities such as A1, A3,

A5 (3 + 6 + 4) = 13.

Questions:

1. What is the duration of the critical path?

Critical Path: The critical path is the longest path through the network diagram
and establishes the shortest time to complete the project. The total float of every
activity in the critical path is zero.

From the above network diagram,

The duration of critical path is A1 A2 A4A5 = 18weeks.
The total float of every activity in the critical path is always zero.

2. What is the float of activity 3?

Float: Float is also known as total float its nothing but how long an activity can be
postponed, without delaying the project completion date. On the critical path, the
total float is zero. Total float is often known as slack.
Total float = Late Start time (LST) – Early Start Time (EST)
and

Late Finish Time (LFT) – Early Finish Time (EFT)

Calculating the Float of Activity 3

Here for Activity 3

EST= 3
LST=8
EFT=9
LFT=14
Float = 5
3 A3 9

8 6 14

According to the float Formula

The slack time of Activity 3 = 5 without delaying the completion of the project.

Float calculation for Activity 3

Total float = Critical path – longest Path of Activity 3 which is (18 – 13 = 5).

The other way of calculating the float for Activity 3 is

Total Float of Activity 3 (A3) = LST- EST which is (8 – 3 =5).

and

LFT – EFT which is (9 – 14 =5).

Hence the float of Activity 3 = 5.

3. What is the float of activity 2?

Here for Activity 2

EST= 3
LST=3
EFT=6
LFT=6

3 A2 6 Float = 0

3 3 6
Total Float of Activity 2 (A2) = LST- EST which is (3 - 3 = 0).

and

LFT – EFT which is (6 – 6 = 0).

Here as the Activity 2 (A2) is in the Critical Path, the float for Activity 2 is zero. Where
the float in the Critical path is always Zero.

4. What is the float of the path with the longest float?

The critical path is the longest path through the network diagram, i.e. a sequence
of activities that defines the validity of the start and end dates of the project and
has no slack time which means the float is always “zero” in critical path.

But from the network diagram above we observed that the second route A1, A3,
A5 is not a critical route, which means that it has a slowdown time of 5 weeks
compared to the critical route. In this diagram, activity 3 is delayed by 5 weeks
from the completion of the first A1 activity. But here it did not cause any
difference or delay in completing the project, as both A3 and A4 activities were
completed within the 14th week

So here the float of the path with longest float is (A1A3A5)

Float of the path (A1A3A5) = duration of the critical path – duration of path
Which means (18 – 13) =5
Where Duration of critical path= 18.
Duration of second (non-critical path) = 13.

5. The resource working on activity 3 is replaced with another resource who

is less experienced. The activity will now take 10 weeks. How will this affect
the project?
