Drawing Basics

Today we’ll be getting to the basic beginnings of

drawing. Beginning with discussing drawing media.
 Media
Dry: Dry media, are media used to create art
which are dry. These include charcoal, oil and
chalk pastels, pencils, etc.

Wet: Wet media used to create art are, Ink,

marker and all different kinds of paint.
 Pencil types
Graphite Pencils-
The lead in pencils isn’t
lead at all, they are
made from graphite.

The numbers assigned

to pencils are related to
the amount of graphite
in the pencil, the harder
the pencil the more clay
binder, the softer the
more graphite.
 Ebony Pencil

Ebony Pencils- Like normal graphite pencils are created

using a graphite mixture, however, instead of clay, ebony
pencils use a mixture of graphite and carbon.

Basic Tripod

Extended Tripod

Overhand

Underhand
Basic Tripod Grip
This a basic grip
probably how you
hold your pencil to
write.

What it’s used for:

drawing small details
for example, the
corners of the eyes.
Extended Tripod Grip
Similar to the basic
tripod grip, however this
grip is much higher on
the pencil.

Uses: similar to control

with the tripod grip,
however you have
typically less control
using this grip. A pro to
this is the ability to keep
your hand from
smudging your artwork.
Overhand Grip
Uses include:

Broad expressive
mark making

Using the side of your

pencil to create value

Should be used with

whole arm
movements.
Underhand Grip

This grip is a rotated

tripod grip.

This is a very light

relaxed pencil grip.

This grip allows for

light gestural
sketching.
Charcoal Pencil
Charcoal pencils, like
compressed and vine
charcoal are created
with carbon. These
pencils give a rich deep
black, while being
easier to control than
other forms of charcoal.
Drawing
Sketches and drawings have
been produced since
prehistoric times.

Early drawings exist today on

The Hall of Bulls are a

collection of cave drawings
which the bulls are the subject.
These are in Lascaux, France.
