If I were to tell you that Saudi Arabia wants the Pakistan Army, but only the Sunni soldiers and
officers, what would your reaction be?

If I were to tell you that the training contingent that is in Saudi right now is only Sunni soldiers and
officers, would you still believe that the Yemen war is justified?

I understand that you want to believe that the conflict in Yemen is justified and that our holy sites are
threatened by the Houthi rebels, but that is simply not the case. This is not a battle for the integrity of
Saudi Arabia, but an expansionist power grab by them to re­instate their chosen leader.

When you have spent the past 2 weeks telling the world that you want the Pakistan Army involved in
the conflict, or as the media has reported it “the Pakistan Army wants to be involved,” only to turn
and demand that only Sunni officers and soldiers are sent to fight, you have to start to wonder what
the greater game is here.
Let’s rewind and understand what the KSA has asked for. During the first few days of the conflict, the
mantra was that Pakistan wanted to be involved. This mantra then morphed, as the world watched
Pakistan stand neutral, to a position that the Saudis wanted a 3­4 year deployment of a full corps of
the Army under their command. The recent meeting between the “dignitaries” of the Government of
Pakistan and the Saudi monarchy determined that Pakistan’s involvement would only be to protect the
integrity of Saudi Arabia and the holy sites. The problem is that when you put our soldiers under the
command of the Saudi monarchy as requested, our commanders are no longer the command unit for
them. They take their orders from Riyadh, not Rawalpindi. If they are ordered to storm Yemen, they
must follow the orders.

But the game here is much larger and we need to understand the context.

In the past few months, the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force and SSG Commandos have made great
advances against the TTP and their affiliated organizations around the country. The GOP has been
pushed to take action against the extremist madrasahs that are funded illegally by foreign countries,
many of which are these same countries asking for our assistance now. When we are nearing the day
where we can honestly say that the terrorist threat in Pakistan has been broken permanently, the
Saudis have launched a campaign against the Houthis even though this conflict has been building for
over 6 months.

The army and the population of Pakistan are united for the first time in many years to eliminate the
scourge of terrorism and extremism, the Saudi are now trying to not only divide the population, but
divide our army as well. When a soldier puts on a uniform, he fights for the country that he calls
home, not the religious beliefs that they carry individually. For a request/order to be made that the
only acceptable soldiers for the Yemen conflict are Sunni and no Shia needs to be sent, it is clear that
this is an attempt to divide our armed forces along religious grounds.

The Pakistan Army is roughly 70% Sunni and to deny deployment to the other 30% smacks of
discrimination and favoritism. Do they believe that a professional military like Pakistan’s can’t see
beyond their individual religious beliefs to fight for a unified, justified cause? If that is the case, then
why ask Pakistan to send its armed forces?

Unless of course your objective is to cause division within our military command and fighting
soldiers.

When we talk about force impact analyses, things like this have a dramatic effect on the morale and
motivation of each soldier. I’m not talking in the context of the fight in Yemen, but the fight here in
Pakistan. When we dare to say that one religious faith isn’t as committed as another, we are walking a
fine line towards eroding the unity of our armed forces, which is a death sentence to a professional
force like the Pakistan Army.

April 6th is a massive day for the country. The President has summoned a joint session of the
Parliament to debate the involvement of the Pakistan military in Saudi Arabia. I believe that this will
not be a debate, but a convincing of why the military must be involved. As we have seen on our
media, the “gifts of the Saudis” are being paraded before the nation, as evidence of their support of
Pakistan and the people.

Let’s look at where the country stands. The liberal political party, the Pakistan People’s Party, has
thrown their support behind the war along with the conservative Pakistan Muslim League­Nawaz. The
religious political parties are quiet in where we should stand. The media is spending their time making
the case that the military must be sent, even though none of the holy sites are threatened. Their biased
reporting has split the country and seeded confusion in the general population, making this decision
much harder.

But please don’t be fooled!
Pakistan has paid with 80,000 innocent lives. These same countries that we are considering to protect
today funded the killers. But when the media makes this case, ask yourself these questions:

­ When we started our fight against terrorists, which one of these countries offered equipment,
materials or financial support to our armed forces?

­ Which one stopped funding the extremist madrasahs and the groups that they currently fund?

­ While we are locked in a battle for our existence, why are we being asked to provide soldiers for a
fight that has nothing to do with us, but has the potential of causing massive bloodshed within our
borders if we chosen one side over the other? And why is no one talking about that potential?

And the biggest question you need to ask and demand an answer for is:

­ When did the Pakistan Army become a mercenary force for hire to the highest bidder? Ready to
fight in any country of the world for the right price.

Remember Lal Masjid, where the media and the population all wanted the Pakistan Army to take
action against the terrorists in the middle of Islamabad. When the Army finally took action, the
majority of the country shifted their position to calling the Lal Masjid brigade victims, forgetting what
they were saying only hours before.

Now, put think about what the reaction of these same people will be if an innocent person is killed
because of a Pakistan Army soldier’s bullet or a bomb being dropped from a Pakistan Air Force
fighter plane.

Why do you want to stand in support of this for our soldiers, our brothers, our fathers?

Stand with Pakistan today. Stand with the Pakistan military today.

Stop believing the media spin and remember what they did during Lal Masjid. They beat the war
drums demanding action and then they called the public media trials to convince the army and our
soldiers of killing innocents.

Are you ready to do this again?

Afzal, supreme thing is interest of Pakistan and image of Pakistan. Let us not forget
that Saudi Arabia has helped Pakistan, whenever the situation was difficult for
Pakistan. They gave free oil in 1999 when there were sanctions against Pakistan
and in 2014, gifted an amount of US Dollars 1.50 Billion. In case, Pakistan ditches
such a proven friend, Pakistan will loose the image of 'friend in need is a friend
indeed'. Pakistan must help Saudi Arabia to the maximum, when they require our

All and sundry should rest sure that Pakistan's involvement in Yemen 
conflict on Saudi request is not going to be happen. Pakistan and Pakistanis are
waking up and voices against involvements in parai Aagh (other's fight)
are getting momentum. No one wish that Pakistan join Saudi & allied
aggression against Yemenites in pursuit of installing a unseated Yemeni
president again. Saudi arabia's sovereignty, integrity is not threatened and no Muslim either
Shiite or Sunni think off damaging and desecrating holy sites. Yes if the holy sites have
threats or it be materialized in future, then blame only the Saudis royals of promiscuous
threats or it be materialized in future, then blame only the Saudis royals of promiscuous
mentalities for staging such a grim act of mischief and conspiracy to pit Muslims against
Muslims to perpetuate their rule in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia didn't asked Pakistan or other
muslim countries to react when Israeli PM. Benjamen Netanyahu threatened to demolish
holy sites. Saudi royals are themselves undermining Muslim unity and robing Muslim of their
attachments to these holy sites by transforming Mecca and Madina as Manhattan of Saudi
Arabia. They are destroying the grandeur of these sites by overshadowing them with tall
buildings and hotels. Those who supports Saudi royals must mind Iqbal" Schmtir wa sinna
awal,Thakhat wa rabab akhir". Only PM Nawaz sharif want us to pay the Saudi back for the

Commendable job by author in revealing the real Suadi desires. But as Zia did when the
same was demanded back in 80s that send only sunni officers to suadia on deputation and
Zia flatly refused to let Pak Army divide on these lines. Same with more force will be done by
Gen Raheel. Author is wrong in assuming that present Pak Army contingent is fully non shia
as i know personally many Shia officers there on deputation for training purposes.

KSA. It is actually like that ................ KSA asks for sunni troops only however,
Pakistan Army sends shia troops also but their strength is very meager and at times

No need to get in a camel jockey fight. This is the same Saudi that recently sent home
300,000 Pak workers. Replaced them with Indians, Lankans and filipinos. Saudi gifts are for
the corrupts to keep them in their pockets. Pak army does not need to get involved and
certainly not on the basis of sunni/shia. Pak shia have been radicalized since that crazy
khomeiny. Suni majority must open arms and create an atmosphere of brotherhood with all
patriotic Pak minorities.

A very factual article.Things are so simple if you want to get hold of them and also too
complicated and complex if you have closed wits.Dragging Pakistan into a new war is
definitely a ditch ahead that's far more devastating for Pakistan than our previous
ventures.Now an extremely alarming situation for army within as if we have a divide in army
on sectarian basis.If true and proved , we are really at verge .We came across many
storms, crossed many oceans of troubles and right now we are likely to root out that
poisonous menace of TTP and ALQAEDA from our country , we see the real threat as to
drag our army into another war and weaken its integrity and strength on religious basis.Be

I honestly believe that this request comes from simple dogmatic roots, not a desire to divide
the Pakistani Army politically. Saudi Arabia has nothing to gain from dissent in Pakistan,
neither in the short nor long term. As a predominantly Muslim South Asian nation, Saudi
Arabia's influence in Pakistan is iron clad as a spiritual leader and representative, which
they value when it comes to regional conflict and control between Pakistan and India, which
is much less susceptible to Saudi's sphere of influence. I honestly believe this request is
just another one of Saudi's inane ridiculous gestures. An alternative theory is that the Houthi
rebels ARE Shi'a, so Saudi may just be worried about the morale, cohesion, and safety of
the joint force. Perhaps they think that Shia Paki groups may sympathize with the rebels and
somehow want to aid their cause. Food for thought.

I don't think it is the matter of any division within Pakistani Army ...for example In 1971
Pakistan army grounded all east Pakistani soldiers ... In lal Masjid operation only Shia SSG
comandoes were used ..... There may not be any sunni shia devision inside Pak ­army but
Saudis fear of any potential infomration leaks during operations .......

I would like to ask the author to reveal his sources about the Saudi army demand!.
Otherwise this piece, like most of what we read, is another rumor and personal opinion. No
news in this article.

Logically thinking, why in the world a professional army will ask another one to pick and
choose from their members? and IF that is true, do you know how much confidential this
type of strategic requests? How does a writer like Mr. Khalid Mohammed knows about it?,
regardless how connected he is to the government officials, these type of requests would be
available to a commander in chief, president or/and prime minister of Pakistan, neither an
ordinary politician nor a defense analyst will get exposed to such sensitive information.

I disagree with the author in that Saudi Arabia has an empire expansion ambitions, if you
look at the kingdom's past history, you will not see any previous attempts toward any
neighboring or far distant country. Why we are starting to think this way now?, unless we
have an agenda in our mind. In the other hand, look at Iran and what it is doing in the Arabian
countries?, It already took over Baghdad, Damascus, Beirut and now Sanaa!. Do you know
that Sunna is a majority in every Arabian country except Bahrain?, why the minority She'a,
in most of the Arabian countries, are trying to take over the majorities?. I thought Pakistani
understand that really well since the demographics is very similar!

it means nawaz sharif have no trust on shia soldiers or shia community in pakistan.
If we see the reality,shia community is under attack in lastr few decades.
Sometime they stop the buses,check the IDs and killed the shia passengers or slaughter
them without any reason.
We took 100s funeral in one suicide attack,they did suicide attacks,bomb blast,target killing.
They target our elite class like doctors,advocates,scholars,professors etc but we never took
revenge,we did peaceful protests.
But now we have to believe that there are two different nations again like we had before
1947.
One nation dont give rights to shias,they dont trust us,they can kill us

Honestly speaking, I don't want to make it very simplistic. There will always be
repercussions. You just have to choose a winning side at the end of day to limit the damage.

Ideally, Pakistan would have been better off alone away from Iran and KSA, but
unfortunately, we have to take sides. Staying neutral would have been taken by the Sauds
as a sign that we are in league with Iran. The massive amount of favors,debts etc we get
from the Arab world would have been compromised. The uncle who wrote the piece makes
the fatal mistake that the catholic church was making at the time of Galileo i.e. keeping
Pakistan is a universal constant and the SUN of the international system. Pakistan in one of
those states who are independent but not yet know what to do with its independence? As I
said, the safest policy is to side with the wining team and limit the damage.

And as far as I heard, Pakistan's presence is to defend Saudi Arabia, not to launch strikes
inside Yemen. But, the liberals would now call this all B.S and stick to the point of being
neutral. Newsflash, we just cant be neutral! We have to be a part of the action regardless of
the fact if we like it or not.

When Mosharraf did the Lal Masjid operation, what sect were those soldiers? No one dared
to raise this questions then. Most/all of the Japanese Americans were held in detention
during WW2. This is a strategic thing and taking precaution is no crime. Besides Saudis are
sweeping across their own country and arresting shiites in qateef and other shia dominated
areas. On the contrary, Saudi should have handled this issue through dialog. Houthis are
not shia, Iran was influencing them, but this was a trap and Saudis have taken the bait.
Pakistan on the other hand needs Saudi, Saudis have supported us in all our
external/internal conflicts while Iran has not. Pakistan should lead this conflict by supporting
Saudis with whatever they need but COVERTLY, while overtly supporting the region.
Finally, conflict in any Muslim country is Pakistan's conflict. A decade after the Mughals
were defeated, Egypt fell and within a few decades the Muslims lost their identity. This is the
information age, Most of the Muslim countries that could put up resistance are down. Lets
not lose allies when when we have so many enemies. Lastly, anyone with cognitive ability
knows that Pakistan cannot put up a fight lasting more then three months (highly optimistic).
