Editor’s Preface and Acknowledgments

This volume is the result of the combined long-term efforts of a large group of
scholars representing embodied-cognition and discourse approaches to meta-
phor. All chapters to this volume were invited and present the specific contri-
butions of their authors to a project intending to unite these two research
traditions. I wish to thank all contributors for their long-term commitment
and outstanding sense of cooperation. I am especially grateful to Lynne
Cameron, Ray Gibbs, Joe Grady, and Gerard Steen, without whose generous
amounts of encouragement and support from the earliest stages of this project,
I would not have been able to make it happen.
The book would not have been possible either without the financial support
of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation (grant no. 20.14.0.021), which enabled the
members of the group to come together at a project workshop attached to
RaAM-10 on June 24, 2014, in Cagliari (Italy). I thank the organizing com-
mittee of RaAM-10 for hosting this additional conference event, and in
particular Elisabetta Gola and Maria Grazia Rossi, not only for their enthusi-
astic help, especially in organizing the live-streaming and recording of the
talks, but also for their excellent culinary advice that helped turn this workshop
into a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
The edition in its present form is furthermore indebted to the comments and
advice of two anonymous reviewers of the book proposal as well as of the
following colleagues who shared their expertise by acting as external review-
ers, providing the authors and editors with very insightful chapter reviews:
Lynne Cameron, Alan Cienki, Seana Coulson, Mark Johnson, and Klaus-Uwe
Panther.
Special thanks go to Frank Lorenz at the Linguistics Department of the
University of Erfurt for his untiring assistance in the creation of the shared
bibliography and the index, as well as to Cambridge University Press’s
editorial and production team, especially Jane Bowbrick, Emma Collison,
Jacqueline French, and Sarah Starkey, for their good advice and assistance in
all technical matters.

xviii Editor’s Preface and Acknowledgments

Finally, I wish to sincerely thank Lynne Cameron a third time, for support-
ing this project not only as a linguist and metaphor scholar but also as an artist
(for her artworks, see http://lynnecameron.com): This book would not be
complete without the special contribution made by its cover image, which is
taken from an original painting on paper that belongs to her “Dynamic Series”
and is entitled We tried them once; they broke our teeth.
