ASSIGNMENT 2

Part 1: Summary

The story that I choose would be Bonnie and Clyde’s romance. Bonnie Elizabeth Parker
(October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934) and Clyde Chestnut Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23,
1934) were an American criminal couple who spent their career traveling around the USA
with their gang during the great depression. Their story began when they first met in
January 5, 1930. Bonnie was assisting her friend at her house and Clyde happen to drop by
at the house and after the two met it became instantaneous that the two were smitten with
each other. Clyde were already a criminal by the time that they met, and Bonnie was a wife
of a convicted murderer at that time. Historians believe that Bonnie joined Clyde’s gang
because she has fallen in love with him. Their life of crime first began when Bonnie assisted
Clyde in escaping from prison by smuggling a gun that he would use in the attempt. Clyde
was later recaptured but after getting paroled in 1932, the couple would go on a crime
spree that lasted 2 years until their death at a shootout from the FBI on May 23, 1934.

Part 2: Analysis

Bonnie’s joining of Clyde’s gang is considered to be a self-expansion opportunity. Both

of them felt a sense of warmth with each other and reciprocity by sharing the same passion
for crime.

The relationship of Bonnie and Clyde can be likened to real love. With the both of them
willing to risk lives for each other and according to Rubin’s measurement of romantic love,
they possess all three elements of it. Mainly attachment, Caring and Intimacy.

For John Lee’s six love style, they fall under Mania. Because of their criminal history and
their tendency to murder for each other. They also have a passionate and romantic love for
each other, never backing down from the authorities till the day they both died.
