PRACTICAL USES:

This apparatus helps us in determining the stability of floating bodies and is useful in the practice of
such method. Determining the metacenter is necessary for the stability of a floating body. If it is
above the center of gravity, body will be stable because the restoring couple produced will shift the
body to its original position.

Stability has been determined by way of calculation which gave the metacentric
height by considering the hull form and loadings. The accuracy of such method is
doubtful due to the difficulty of obtaining a reliable figure for the vertical location of
the center of gravity of an actual loaded ship. This vertical center of gravity is usually
obtained by calculation combining the center of gravity of the built weight with that
of the dead weight. To employ such a test to an actual loaded ship is impractical
because it is difficult, delicate, expensive and time consuming. This apparatus helps
us to lessen the probability of making a mistake, because we will know how to
determine the metacenter in a more convenient and easier way than doing it in actual
that may lead to casualties. This equipment will be our practice companion in
determining a floating body’s stability.
