Evaluate the Book for the following elements
Style and Language: Using examples for the book, explain the following: Word
choices, dialogue, rhythm, rhyme and sentence length. Share unexpected insights or
interesting information the reader learns from this story. (5 points)
Dialogue is just based on both their lives. Not much rhythm and rhyme just story
telling about the two friends who were very much alike.

I did not know the two were both friends, I did know who they were but not that they
were very alike and were friends with each other.

How can the reader relate to the character?
Who are the supporting characters?
Amelia Earnheart

To be an outspoken person who does things different. Try different things. Back then
women were not look up to as women who could fly airplanes and do things of that
sort.

Elenor Roosevelt

Plot: Summarize the major events of the story (6 points)


The two Emelia and Elenor get together for dinner with their husbands and friends.
Amelia tells them about her getting her pilots license and how amazing it is to fly. She
then talks about teaching Elenor how to fly and how easy it is. The two fly together in
the plane and she shows her the wonders of the sky and seeing the town from so
high up. Telling reporters about the experience in amazement because a women
could fly a plane. They then take a ride in Elenors’ new car for a night ride together.

Setting: Explain the place and time of this book. (2 points)


Theme: What is the main message of this book? (2 points)
Washington D.C in the earl 1930’s when the women’s right came about.

That women can do whatever their heart desires that they can do things men can do
and people should not frown upon it.

Illustration: Analyze the book you selected with the following categories
Style (realism, surrealism, expressionism, impressionism, naïve, cartoon art)? (2

Realism everything was nicely drawn to replicate what both women looked like and
how the planes and cars looked at that time as well.

Media Choice (paints, oils watercolors, pencils, pen, charcoal, crayons, acrylic, chalk):

Pen and pencil. Lots of shading to show the propellers on the plane turning round
and round.
Give examples of describe how the following visual elements are used in the
illustrations: (3)
Line: not much bold and defined lines
Shapes: lots on the planes and circles for the clouds and on the cars
Color: no color just black and white and gray shading
Texture: The texture is great when you look at the clouds in the sky and the sun
shining through, how her goggles looked with them being given a reflection.
Page design (placement of the illustrations, use of borders, white and dark space and
all pages the same or different). (3)
The Pictures took over the entire page whether it was a picture of the two women or
when they are looking over the town to the front of their house. The small space that
was blank on some pages was columned off for the test on the pages. Each page had
different illustrations and different pictures of what the story was telling. All being
about the two friends and their adventure together.

Being able to fully understand how out of the ordinary it was for women to do certain
things. Understanding that flying planes has been around for a long time and a man
or a woman is able to fly a plane now.

Why?
I like how it created a certain part of the story but I think if I somewhat explained a
little more about why they couldn’t and how it shas changed like the extras would
have been a greater subject to talk about. It does give a good idea of how it should be
for the age book it is read to it allows for many open ended questions.

4. Teaching (What will you do?)


After reading the book it gives the recipe for angel food cake with pink clouds
which is Elenors favorite dessert. Talk about what is healthy and how a dessert
can be delicious and healthy and how positioning can be a great way to enjoy a
sweet treat. Allow children to make their own pink clouds on angel food cake.
5. Closure:
Talk to children about healthy options and how desserts do not have to be full of
sugar and candy to still be a delicious treat and eating healthy food will help treat
yourself and enjoy a nice treat every now and again.
