Bearing pedestals type HM2 - HM50


Bearing pedestals type HM have been designed as universal bearing
pedestals. They can be used in combination with a measuring device for
adjustment of the geometrical dimensions of the rotor or for manual adjustment
of calibration masses. Bearing pedestals can be supplied with or without
manually operated carriage according to the machine size. The bearing cradle
with the bearings is supported by two vertical supports designed as
dynamometers. The stiffness of the bearing pedestals is so high that the
balancing runs are performed in the subcritical range. Bearing pedestals are
therefore also defined as "hard".
The unbalance vibration is transmitted from the push rod of the bearing cradle
to the vibration pickup by means of a lever system. The adjustment of the
moving coil rod must not be changed on the lever arm, for otherwise there is
the risk of altering the sensitivity of the measuring system. The clamping
screws of the push rod, leverage and moving coil rod must always be tightened
in order to avoid measuring errors.
The bearing cradle can be supplied, according to the rotor type, with roller
bearings or friction bearings.

Umar depends also from the drive system. Umar will not be better then 0,1
gmm / kg rotor weight with belt drive and not better then 0,5 gmm / kg rotor
weight with shaft drive.

2. Features of the bearing pedestals type HM


 The measuring range of the bearing pedestals is very large.
 Resonance of the bearing pedestal is prevented even at high exciting forces
(bladed rotors and heavy universal joint shafts).
 A high degree of safety is guaranteed with heavy rotors and at high speeds.
 Balancing is possible at very low speeds.
 There are no risks during operation of rotors with very large diameter,
because there is no cradle retention which needs to be released.
 Several balancing speeds are possible thanks to the measuring system
used.

3. Overview of the machine parts


The following illustration as all illustrations is a guide in the instruction manual
to identify the desired parts. Since these instructions are valid for a series of
balancing machines, some of the illustrations my differ form your model or be
completely missing.

3.1 Twin roller carriages and counterbearings


In twin roller carriage, the rotor journal is carried by two rollers and is centered.
The rollers are crowned for balancing reasons. They must not be replaced by
commercially available roller bearings.

The rotor is placed with its journals, or if possible, with the internal rings of its
anti-friction bearings on the support rollers. The running surfaces of the support
rollers must be oiled several times a day.
The counterbearings prevent the rotor from jumping off the twin roller carriage
in case of too high unbalance or overhung supports.

Absolutely avoid that the journals and support rollers have the same diameter.
Both diameters must differ by at least 5 %, better by 10 %. To meet this
requirement, numerous sets of twin roller carriages are available for
succeeding diameter ranges. Each pair of rollers is mounted in a carriage for
an easier replacement.

3.2 V-roller bearings


These bearings are used for balancing the rotors in their own anti-friction
bearings.

If possible, rotors should be balanced in their own bearings in order to


compensate also their radial runout. The ball bearings are placed with their
outer rings on the v-rollers which can be rotated around their axes and yield in
case of vibrations of the bearings in opposite direction, thereby preventing the
anti-friction bearings of the rotor from jamming. The v-roller bearings height
can be adjusted by means of a screw in such a way that the rotor remains
horizontal even when its own bearings have different external diameters. A dial
gauge serves as reference. The dial gauge is graduated in mm relative to the
outer diameter of the ball bearings. The locking screw of the bearing carriage
is to be retightened upon height adjustment.

The rotor’s own bearings must not be removed any more after balancing. V-
roller bearings must not be used for self-aligning bearings!

4. Setting up the bearing pedestals


4.1 Selecting the twin roller carriage
Each balancing machine is generally equipped with twin roller carriages.

When unscrewing the clamping levers, the twin roller carriage is not fixed and
can fall off. Secure it by hand while loosening the clamping levers. If necessary,
employ the help of another person, otherwise there is the risk that the twin
roller carriage might fall off and cause injury to people or be damaged.

Mount the correct twin roller carriages for the journal diameter of the rotor. For
the admissible journal diameter see the Technical Data and the indications on
the twin roller carriage itself.

Steps:
Preliminary condition: There must be no rotors in the balancing machine!
 Unscrew the clamping levers (1) and dismantle the twin roller carriage (2).
 Only in case of belt drive: Attach the axial thrust stop (3) to the new twin
roller carriage.
 Mount the new twin roller carriage.
 Check the tightness of all screws and clamping levers loosened during
installation.

4.2 Adjusting the twin roller carriage to the journal diameter


Both twin roller carriages must be adjusted to the correct rotor journal diameter.

Correctly set the roller bearings, or the measurement accuracy might be


affected.

Absolutely retighten all screws and clamping levers which had been loosened.
Otherwise there is the risk that the rotor is not correctly guided. In extreme
cases the rotor can jump off the supports and injure people.

Steps:
Preliminary condition: There must be no rotors in the balancing machine.
 Measure the rotor journal diameter on both sides of the rotor.
 Set the journal diameter for each twin roller carriage by means of the screw
(1). Check the setting on the dial gauge (2).
 Tighten all screws and clamping levers that had been loosened.

4.3 Positioning the bearing pedestals


The bearing pedestals must be set to the rotor dimensions and the rotor
journals.
Set the bearing pedestals in such a way that they are at a min. distance of 10
mm from any rotating parts. If rotating parts touch the pedestal, this could injure
people or damage machine components or the rotor.

Observe the following points:


 Clean and oil the balancing machine base before moving the bearing
pedestals.
 The bearing pedestals must not be moved past the machine base edge
(see figure: Max. position).
 The bearing pedestals must be at a min. distance of 10 mm from the
rotating parts on both sides .

Steps:
Preliminary condition: There must be no rotors in the balancing machine
 Loosen the clamping levers (1) of the bearing pedestal.
 Move the bearing pedestal according to the design:
G by hand
G by lifting the clamping lever (2) with the ratchet (2).
 Tighten the clamping levers (1)of the bearing pedestal. Check the tightness
of all screws and clamping levers loosened during installation.

5. Loading the rotor


5.1 Loading the rotor on support rollers
Always place the rotor very carefully on the support rollers. When using lifting
devices, operate them at very low speed.

When using lifting devices, observe their safety instructions.

Do not move the rotor axially on the supports. The support rollers or the rotor
could be damaged.

Steps with belt drive:


 Preliminary condition:
G The belt is inserted in the belt drive
G There are no rotors in the balancing machine
 Clean the running surfaces of the support rollers and apply a coat of
commercially available oil.
 Pull the belt from the tensioning pulley.
 Place the belt sideways over the support rollers.
 Place the rotor in its final axial position and simultaneously put on the belt.

Steps with of universal joint shaft drive:


 Preliminary condition: There are no rotors in the balancing machine
 Clean the running surfaces of the support rollers and apply a coat of
commercially available oil.
 Place the rotor in its final axial position

Instruction for loading the rotors with centre of gravity


outside the pedestals (negative load on one pedestal)
If the centre of gravity falls outside the pedestals, this will create a load on one
pedestal in the upward direction. This upward force (negative force) is
compensated by the counterbearing with roller.

5.2 Closing and adjusting the counterbearings


The counterbearings must always be closed and set during balancing. Any
safety devices must be in position.
Close the counterbearings prior to each balancing run. There is otherwise the
danger that the rotor gets in an uncontrolled condition and jump off the
supports, injuring people and damaging the balancing machine.

Steps - Counterbearing with roller (7):


 Close the counterbearing. Make sure that the safety device (2) is secured.
Fix the safety device (3)
 Adjust the roller (7) of the counterbearing by loosening the screws (6).
 Adjust the distance between the roller (7) and the journal in such a way that
the roller is very close to the journal without rotating with it.
Retighten all loosened screws and clamping levers.

Steps - Counterbearing with friction element (5):


 Close the counterbearing. Make sure that the safety device (1) is secured in
position.
 Adjust the friction element (5) of the counterbearing by loosening the
clamping lever (4).
 Adjust the friction element (5) in such a way that there is a minimum gap to
the rotor journal
 Retighten all loosened screws and clamping levers.

outside the pedestals.
Adjust the counterroller in such a way that
 both support rollers make contact with the rotor
 the support rollers are yet loose enough to be manually turned relative to
the rotor
 the admissible upward force acting on the counterroller is not exceeded.
This contact between journals and twin roller carriages is necessary for the
measurement.

Do not exceed the admissible upward force acting on the counterbearing. In


case of doubt, remeasure it by means of a force measuring device. Otherwise
the rotor could destroy the counterbearing, become uncontrollable and injure
people as well as damage the balancing machine .

The counterroller can backup only a limited upward force.

5.3 Adjusting the axial thrust stops


Only for belt drive.
The axial thrust stops limit the movement of the rotor during balancing in an
axial direction.
The axial thrust stop is always positioned on an end face of the rotor.

Rotors that are insufficient or not at all secured can run onto the balancing
machine, become uncontrollable and injure people as well as damage the
balancing machine. In case of failure of the axial guidance in balancing mode,
clear the shop immediately. See also chapter „Conduct in case of failure”.

Steps:
 Set the axial thrust stop (1) with the knob (2) in such a way that,
G the rotor almost touches the axial thrust stop .
G the angle between contact surface and axial thrust stop does not exceed
30 degree (see figure nearby A) .
G even in case of light jumping of the rotor, the rotor cannot overrun the
axial thrust stops. As a rule, 10 mm is normally sufficient (see figure
nearby A).
 Select as contact surface of the rotor (B):
G either the end of the journal (A)
G or another suitable end face (B) of the rotor (collar)
 Tighten all clamping screws (2) of the axial thrust stop.

During operation the axial thrust stop may give way a little, but not enough to

6. Maintenance
6.1 Bearing pedestals
The bearing pedestal has only few parts that need a regular upkeep and
maintenance. Obviously the rollers must always be kept clean, otherwise there
is the risk of damage of the rotor journal, premature wear of the rollers and in
extreme cases the measuring equipment readout can be affected. In most
cases it is sufficient to occasionally apply a few drops of acid-free machine oil
and/or wipe down the raceways. The other movable parts such as the sliding
surface of the twin roller carriage, the adjusting spindle, the pivot point of the
counterbearings, are cleaned and lubricated now and then, when necessary.

The movement of bearing pedestals on the machine base is easier when the
sliding surface is protected against damage and soiling and is slightly
lubricated.

6.2 Twin roller bearings


6.2.1 Rollers with totally enclosed bearings and lifetime lubrication
Following checks/operations should be performed after approx. 250 operating
hours:
 Check if the rollers rotate freely.
 Check the play of the rollers.
 Check if the running surface of the rollers is damaged (pitting, cracks).
 Replace the bearings that do not rotate freely and the bearings with
eccessive play.
 Replace the bearings affected by damaged running surfaces.
 Completely replace the rollers with integrated bearings.

6.2.2 Rollers with removable sealings in the bearings


Following checks/operations should be performed after approx. 250 operating
hours:
 Check if the rollers rotate freely.
 Check the play of the rollers.
 Check if the running surface of the rollers is damaged (pitting, cracks).
 If the rollers do not rotate freely,
dismount the bearings, wash them thoroughly and fill them with new grease.
 If the bearing play is excessive,
mount new anti-friction bearings.
 If the running surfaces are damaged,
replace the rollers affected by damaged running surfaces.

Following checks/operations must be performed after approx. 2,000 operating


hours:
 Even bearings that did not show any irregularity after 250 operating hours,
must be washed thoroughly after 2,000 operating hours at the latest and be
filled with new grease (fill approx. 1/3 of the hollow spaces with grease).
Before remounting the bearings:
 Check if the bearings are suitable for use after they have been washed. A
visual check normally suffices. Check the rolling elements, the raceways
and the cages for damage (e.g. cracks).

Immediately replace the damaged bearings!
