पञ्चमः पाठः - ५ कण्टके न ैव कण्टकम ्

This is a very interesting folk tale of Madhya Pradesh which is written in the style of
Panchatantra. This story is very interesting because it portrays man’s greed in a very innocent
style. In this story, a hunter rescues a tiger who promised him that he will not eat the hunter.
However after the tiger was freed he breaks his promise and decides to attack the hunter. The
hunter was sad and shocked but he learns that everyone wants to satisfy his/her selfish
needs. Further:- (Lomashika = female fox)

Now Lomashika said, “Very good human, now lay down the net.” She told the tiger that she

wanted to know how he got trapped in the net. The foolish tiger narrated the entire event but

Lomashika wanted to know exactly what caused him to get trapped in the net. So the tiger

jumped on the net again and again showing how he got trapped. Suddenly the tiger was

trapped again. Due to excess physical activity he became tired. Hungry, tired and trapped

again, the tiger begged for mercy. But Lomashika replied ,”Tiger, as you have said-

everything is fair in greed.”
