INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Developing countries like the Philippines should keep pace with the fast, changing technologies
experienced by industrialized and first world countries. A basic requirement for development is the
building of resilient infrastructure which would promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization in
areas outside of Metro Manila, which could further decongest these highly urbanized areas. Investment in
infrastructure and innovation are crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

The national government through its flagship program of Build, Build, Build is in its pipeline the
construction of a multibillion peso project, Quezon-Bicol Expressway, a 220 kilometer expressway that
will start at Pagbilao, Quezon and end at San Fernando, Camarines Sur and will lessen the travel time by
2.2 hours. With its construction, inclusive growth and industrialization in the Bicol Region could be
realized in the years to come. The present state of infrastructure in the Quezon-Bicol area is aging and
degraded which makes conducting business very challenging. Raw materials and other resources needed
in production mostly came from Metro Manila which add costs to the business. Further innovation in the
industry coupled with investment in building infrastructure will surely stimulus growth in the countryside.
