‘Stilt houses can defy floodwaters’

KOCHI: In light of floodwaters entering several houses built after last year’s floods, it is critical that architects and engineers adopt new designs while building housing

Laterite stones (chenkkallu) are widely used in construction as they are available at a cheaper cost but the problem is that constructions built using such stones are vulnerable to floods. Laterite stones get
soaked and as a result, the structures sink and collapse.

structure after assessing the potential flood-level. The floor of the house should be above the potential flood-level,” said structural engineer Anil Joseph.

400-500sq feet can be built at a cost of Rs 5.50-Rs 6 lakh as part of the rebuilding process.
On construction at places hit by landslides, Joseph said it is scientifically possible to identify regions prone to landslides. “Constructions should not be permitted at ecologically-sensitive areas. Buildings
should not be reconstructed at vulnerable hilly terrains. People have to be evacuated from such regions and rehabilitated at safe zones,” he said.
In the wake of repeated natural disasters, it has become a pivotal point to have a relook into structure and engineering aspects. Even at locations where rebuilding activities have taken place after last year’s
flood, proper soil testing have not been conducted. VD Satheesan MLA, who represents North Paravur constituency, which is one of the most vulnerable regions in the state, said: “It’s high time we come up
with permanent structures. The designs of the buildings must be changed. We need to rework on engineering aspects. The foundation, height and strength of the structures should be assessed based on
the vulnerability of the land. Quality has to ensured and the reconstructed structures should be able to survive rising waters,” he said.
