Last Sunday we saw how we should act in relation to temptations

My faith in relation to the word of God

Today we are going to analyze some verses that talk about this topic

James 1:1-19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and
slow to become angry,
James 1:1-20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

take note of this (eído)

receive and retain diligently something that is very important
keep in mind, remember, what I am going to tell you because it is very important.
James immediately catches the attention of these people.
when something is important, we write it, because we don't want to forget.
James was asking for an attitude of solemnity, respect, this was something we should take seriously

it's interesting because God asks us the same attitude about his word

Pr 7:1 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.

Pr 7:2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

As you can see it gives us the impression that it is something really precious that we have to keep with all our hearts

What is my reaction when God is speaking to me?

What is my attitude towards the word of God?
what priority does the word of god have in my life?

Psalm1:2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night
am I delighting in the bible?
am I meditating on the bible?
Christianity has to go back to the bible

should be quick to listen

James was saying how important it is to hear the voice of God.
This speaks of an attitude of a humble heart, who has the desire to hear what God has for him.
There is nothing more important in this world than hearing what God has to say.
this implies focusing my mind my heart all my strength on just what God wants to communicate to us.

Luke 10:38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened
her home to him.
Luke10:39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
Luke10:40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked,
“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Luke10:41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,
Luke 10:42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken
away from her.”
There was Mary sitting listening carefully
Pr 8 :34 Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.

This verse speaks about a person who enjoys fully contemplating the words of God

John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
Listen: (akoúo) the sheep constantly hear and understand what the shepherd wants

slow to speak
For many people this is a very difficult task
Most people are quicker to speak than to listen.
Many proverbs verses say it is not good to speak too much.

Pr 13:3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
Pr 17:28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.

Many times, our own words expose us and evidences what is in our hearts

how many times people ask you something, but the real reason is just to say what they think?
Or people who have an answer for everything, they don't even take a second to assimilate what you're talking about.
or those people who only talk about them.
or those who take control of the conversation.

we don't have to say what we think, we have to think what we're going to say
weigh if what I am going to say is correct.
If it's time
If the person is mature to understand.
If someone can get hurt by what I say.

slow to become angry

The Greeks used this word to refer to a natural impulse or a manifestation of a powerful inner passion.
Christian counselors report that 50 percent of people who come in for counseling have problems dealing with anger.

Types of anger
Anger is not always sin. There is a type of anger of which the Bible approves, often called “righteous indignation.”

God's anger
1King 11:9 The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of
Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
In the bible we can see that God manifested his anger in different situations

Jesus’ anger
Mark 11:15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying
and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,
Mark 11:16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
Mark 11:17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all
nations’[c]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.
Our Lord Jesus was angry because they were corrupting the temple
Christian's anger
Acts 17:16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.
Eph 4:26 In your anger do not sin” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

As Christians we must also have this feeling of righteous indignation to the sin.
There must be a reaction of rejection against the sin that surrounds us.
But this reaction should not lead us to sin,
But if we have already sinned because of the anger in our hearts, we have to fix that problem right away.

James 1: 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
If I live my life getting angry all the time arguing with my brothers in Christ, complaining about everything, raising my
voice to people to impose what I think
Do you think that God is glorified that way?
Reacting with anger often hurts people
because we say things, we shouldn't say
because we do things, we shouldn't do

One of the things that anger produces is the root of bitterness.

He 12:15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and
defile many.

Someone once said the root of bitterness is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die

Grows in our hearts.

Hinders our growth.
Pollute others.
Really what produces righteousness is to have a humble attitude, recognizing my problem and ask God for
forgiveness and my brother in Christ.

Mt 5:23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has
something against you,
Mt5:24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

This verse is very clear, we cannot offer anything to God, if I am not reconciled with my brother in Christ

Here in this verse we find what I call the principle of the Initiative

and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you
First go and be reconciled to them

James 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted
in you, which can save you.

An exhortation to remove things

James urges these people to remove everything that does not produce righteousness

get rid of all (apotídsemi) get something out of the house

1P 1:1Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

We have to make drastic decisions in our lives

An exhortation to receive
humbly accept
it implies being willing to submit to the direction an authority of the word of God in my life
1P 1:2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

the word planted in you, which can save you.

the word of God one day was planted in my heart, that word that has the message of salvation that changed my
eternity, that word can also change my behavior

we have to examine ourselves and decide take the word of God

as a privilege in life.
as a priority in life.
as a principle in life.
