“Good Joke”

Montresor describes his enemy as a well-respected individual who is also feared by his

peers. According to Montresor, Fortunato is boastful when it comes to painting and gemmary.

He is also described as a wine expert, which is why he jumps at the chance to taste the extremely

rare Amontillado wine.

Several flaws lead to Fortunato’s downfall. First, he takes pride in his wine tasting

abilities. Montresor knew this and use it against him. He offer him to the catacombs and insist to

let him identify if the cask of amontillado is authentic or not. This is an offer Fortunato can’t

resist. Overall, Fortunato's character flaws impact his decision-making abilities and prevent him

from recognizing Montresor as a dangerous enemy. His excessive pride and affinity for wine

also contribute to his terrible decision to follow Montresor deep into his family's catacombs.

Fortunato is completely unaware of the fact that Montresor plans on murdering him, and

he freely hurls insults at Luchresi when Montresor mentions that he may be able to identify
whether or not the Amontillado is authentic. Fortunato is an unsuspecting victim, who follows

Montresor into his family's catacombs, where he is buried alive.
