Montressor

“He who plans to hurt others often hurts himself.” An amazing wine connoisseur cursed
with the pain of revenge. Insulted by a fellow wine connoisseur, namely Fortunato, he held that
grudge and vowed for revenge. During the execution of his revenge, he had sympathy which
made him become considerate of Fortunato. While getting to know him more, you may identify
whether you are a modern Montressor.
He is a man who was formed from the insults of a fellow wine connoisseur. When he
knew that Fortunato stepped across the line and went too far, he set his eyes on his end goal of
revenge. He lured Fortunato into thinking that he had a cask of Amontillado. Eventually leading
Fortunato to the catacombs where no cask of Amontillado was found, Montressor took the
opportunity to chain Fortunato up against the wall. He got his revenge but did not quite get the
satisfaction.
Montressor had a very difficult personality which was holding a grudge. Instead of letting
go of what Fortunato did, that event made his fire for revenge burn even brighter. If you look at
it at Montressor’s point of view though, you just might understand him. If someone would
insult your family name, then you too would be angry. Same was felt by Montressor.
During the time that the two were in the catacombs, Montressor saw that Fortunato had a
severe cough and offered him to stop and go back up for some fresh air. Fortunato declined and
insisted to continue the journey. In this instance it shows that Montressor did care for Fortunato,
offering him options to cancel, but with Fortunato’s ego, it did not stop him from trying to
reach the cask of Amontillado.
Of all the characters in the story, this stood out the most for me. It shows how every
single one of us has a Montressor. Montressor had two conflicts, with himself and with
Fortunato. The first conflict was with himself because he would not have reached the point of
revenge if he had just let it slide. Fortunato would not have been chained up against a wall if he
had not insulted the Montressors. I have had times where I revenged, but it did not feel as good
as I thought it would be. It somehow felt the I punched myself.
