The cathode and anode plates are prepared and their casting is done.
The main component used in the lead-acid battery is lead, so it is first melted under
safety conditions and is converted into desired shaping.
The anode is lead frame containing spongy lead and cathode is a lead frame containing
lead oxide and is connected with each other.
Pb3O4 (red oxide) is made for positive electrode whereas PbO 2 (grey) is made for negative
electrode.
The cathode and anodes are assembled inside of a hard plastic casing and conc. H2SO4 is
added later.
The plate separator and wires are also assembled together in the battery.
After assembling the components the battery is sealed and is charged in series with other
batteries.
During the charging of the batteries, the energy is supplied from external source, so
energy is stored in between the two plates which act as a capacitor.
The reaction takes place in cathode and anode.
The reaction occurred are:
At anode (oxidation):
Pb++ + 2H2O PbO2 + 4H+
\
Finally the battries are packed and supplied to demanded places.
The main component in making the lead acid batteries i.e lead can be recycled to about 99%
purity from a scrap battery. So, with the proper implementation in the Research sector and with
proper utilities, we can recycle it to produce new products.
