Why do we use question tags?

 Question tags are small questions that are placed at the end of an affirmative or
negative phrase making it, so to speak, an interrogative phrase.
 They are mainly used in spoken English, when we try to find confirmation of
what we have just said or also to endow a sentence with an especially kind,
emphatic or even ironic character.
What are the rules of question tags?
Structure
Para oraciones afirmativas: Oración afirmativa + coma + auxiliar negativo + subject
pronoun?

o Annie is the tallest in class, isn’t she? / Annie es la más alta de la

clase, ¿verdad?
Para oraciones negativas: Oración en negativo + coma + auxiliar en
afirmativo + subject pronoun?

o Annie isn’t the tallest in class, is she? / Annie no es la más alta de la

clase, ¿verdad?
Rules
 Tag questions always use auxiliary verbs.
 With affirmative sentences we use a tag question in NEGATIVE.
 With negative sentences we use a tag question in YES or POSITIVE.
