INT.

SAN DIEGO COURTROOM - AFTERNOON

The jury is passing a piece of paper to the judge. In the

middle of the courtroom, a young black man with blue-eyes
taps his foot as he looks up to the judge. LOGAN SMITH
twiddles his thumb as JUDGE GREGOR stands.

JUDGE GREGOR
May everyone rise?

Everyone in the jury rises.

JUDGE GREGOR
The jury finds the defendant, Logan
Quinton Smith, guilty of murder in the
first degree.

As the jury chatters, Logan stares into space. His eyes and
jaw wide-open. He turns to BEN CLARENCE, a blond-haired green
-eyed man who glares at Logan. Logan is escorted out of the
building.

INT. PRISON CELL - DAY

Logan lays in the bed and twiddles his thumb. He shakes his
left leg as he stares into the ceiling.

LOGAN
(to himself)
What the hell happened? I didn't kill
Ms. Clarence. She was my good friend.
(screaming)
I should not be in this hellhole of a
place right now!

He punches the wall. He buries his face in his hands for a

moment and then takes a look through the small window covered
with bars. He takes a look at the rainy weather and feels a
tear come down his cheek. He turns around as he hears a
voice. The sheriff, GARY JOHNSON, walks in.

GARY
It's time for sentencing.

INT. SAN DIEGO COURTROOM - AFTERNOON

The jury passed the sentenced to the judge as everyone

stands.

JUDGE GREGOR
The jury has found the defendant,

Logan Smith, guilty of the murder of

Carrie Clarence. You have savagely
beaten this woman to death. The
brutality of the crime is barbaric.
That being said, you are sentenced to
life in prison, with no possibility of
parole. Anything you would like to say
to Mr. Clarence before you serve your
sentence?

Logan stares directly towards Ben, who responds to Logan with

an angry glare.

LOGAN
(angrily)
Do you really think that I fucking
killed your wife or did you just jump
to that conclusion for revenge?

Ben jumps at Logan, but the police officers hold him back.
Ben breathes heavily before glaring at the man who is being
escorted out of the room

BEN
Before you rot in prison, I just have
to say this...
(shouting)
You know exactly what you did. You're
a bitch. You enjoy picking on the
weak. I hope the prisoners eat you
alive before you burn in hell asshole!

The officers drag Logan out of the courtroom. Gary puts his
hand on Ben's shoulder before Ben pushes him away.

BEN
(softly)
Please... not now.

Ben walks out and Gary stares at the door that leads to the
prison that Logan was taken to.

INT. PRISON COMMON AREA - NIGHT

Logan sweeps around the common area when he sees a man take a
small weapon from a prisoner's pocket. MICHAEL ROGERS notices
that Logan caught him and he walks up to him. Logan backs
away shaking as the man walked closer.

MICHAEL
Don't worry sonny! I'm not gonna hurt

ya! I just want to talk!

Michael puts his hand out. Logan looks around both ways
before focusing on the old man with toothy, wrinkly smile.

LOGAN
(slowly)
I-I'm... Logan... Logan Smith. I-

MICHAEL
(interrupting)
My name is Michael Ross Rogers. I have
been in here for 20 years!

LOGAN
(quietly)
T-Twenty?

MICHAEL
(cheerfully)
Yes sonny! That's what happens when ya
get convicted for a crime! I am told
that I will spend the rest of my life
in jail unless I get paroled within a
few years.
(looks down)
Not sure I'd I want to get out of here
to be perfectly honest.
(looks at Logan)
What about you sonny?

INT. PRISON COMMON AREA - NIGHT A MOMENT LATER

Logan sits there and shifts his eyes around the room. He
looks Michael in the eye.

LOGAN
I-I am in here for the murder of
Carrie Clarence. How do you survive in
here?

Michael hides a pocketknife in his pocket that Logan is

staring at.

MICHAEL
(whispers)
Sonny, don't ask questions that you
don't you don't need to know about.
Just keep your mouth shut and don't
piss any of the prisoners off.
Especially him.

Michael points behind Logan towards a large, muscular man.

REX DIAZ looks at Logan with a smile and punches his fist.
Logan gulps and turns back to Michael.

LOGAN
(panicking)
How do I get out of here? I don't know
if I can make it twenty years.

Michael laughs at Logan's face and puts a hand his shoulder.

Logan frowns takes a step back.

MICHAEL
Sonny, you are not getting out of
here. You are spending every day in
this damned confinement for the rest
of your life. Life means life. Your
life is over. You're now just a
walking corpse. A caged animal. A tool
for work. Whichever term you prefer.

Logan has his mouth wide open as Michael walks away. After he
watches Michael mop again, Logan goes back to sweeping.

INT. PRISON CAFETERIA - MORNING

Logan sits at a table by himself as he attempts to eat his

breakfast which consisted of a small plate of scrambled eggs
and a piece of ham. However, only eats about half of the eggs
before he just pushes the eggs away. As he gets ready to
leave, Michael sits at his table.

LOGAN
What are you doing here? I had enough
of your shit from last night.

MICHAEL
Why would you want be by yourself in
prison? You need a friend to cope and
survive and I can tell by talking to
you that you are not that bad.

Logan stares at his eggs before looking at Michael.

LOGAN
(confused)
Why would I want to be friends with
criminals here?

Logan hears loud screaming from behind. He turns around as he

sees a man getting POUNDED on by other inmates. They stomp on

his face as the man's screams get more muffled. When he stops
breathing, a man who goes by REX stands over the lifeless
body as he motions the other inmates to drag the body out of
the cafeteria.

REX
Stealing in prison? You thought you
were that slick Mr. Lester.

Logan slowly turns around to Michael, shaking from head to

toe as he attempts to put his hand on the table.

LOGAN
So tell me more about yourself.

Michael smiles as he grabs a forkful of eggs.

EXT. SAN DIEGO PARK - DAY

Ben is walking through the park with his young and small son,
STEVE. Steve waddles over to Ben as he pauses when he sees a
familiar face. Ben smiles he meets Gary for the first time
after the murder trial.

GARY
Hello Mr. Clarence! Wonderful weather
we are having isn't it?

BEN
Yes officer! Me and my son decided to
take a walk because of how nice this
weather is. What are you up to
officer...

GARY
(abruptly)
Johnson. Officer Johnson, but you can
call me Gary. It's nice to see you
again with your son.

Gary extends his hand towards Ben. Ben extends his to give
the officer a handshake. However, Ben watches as his son
tries to wander off without him.

BEN
(shouting)
Steve!

STEVE
Yes daddy?

Ben motions for Steve to come by his side again which Steve
nods and waddles over.

GARY
Would you two gentlemen care to go to
a nearby McDonald's for lunch. It
would be my treat.

Ben looked at his son who was smiling then shifted his eyes
toward a playground.

BEN
(turning to Gary)
Yeah... that sounds good. Steve, would
you like to go to McDonald's with Mr.
Gary?

STEVE
(jumping)
Yes daddy! That sounds wonderful!

BEN
(turns to Gary)
Sounds good to us!

Gary smiles and the two men walk through the park. Steve
stays closely with his father the entire time and holds his
hand.

INT. MCDONALD'S RESTAURANT - DAY

Steve is gobbling up his fries quickly. Ben takes a sip out

of his drink before he looks Gary in the eye.

BEN
Thank you so much for your service. I
know I had my moments of anger and
desperation to get him locked up, but
you helped bring peace to me and my
son. We will not forget about it. If
there is anything you need from me to
repay the favor, let me know.

Gary bites into his double cheeseburger as Ben tells him

this. Gary smiles after he swallows the bite.

GARY
(laughing)
No worries man, it's just my job.

Ben smiles as he looks at another couple where the woman has

a ring on her finger. His smile fades and he looks down at

his food. Steve notices that his father has tears running
down his eyes and puts his hand on his leg.

STEVE
(crying)
It's okay daddy! Please don't cry! I'm
here for you!

Ben takes a look at his son and hugs him and takes a look at
Gary.

GARY
Listen, I know I cannot cure the pain
you're in and I can never truly
understand the situation you're in...
but what I do want to tell you is that
I'm here. If you or your son ever need
me for anything I will always be here
for you guys.

BEN
(wiping tears away)
T-Thank you Gary. You're a good man...
we have got to go, but I will let you
know how things are going.

Ben and Steve get out of their seats. Steve walks up to Gary
and gives him a fist bump. Gary smiles as he waves to them as
they walk out of the restaurant.

INT. PRISON CELL - NIGHT

Logan and Michael are sitting in their bunks. Logan is

tapping his leg with his fingers. Michael is humming to
himself. Logan face-palms as Michael continues to hum louder
and louder.

LOGAN
(shouting quietly)
Will please stop humming old man?!

Michael suddenly quits and frowns at Logan, who climbed down

the bunk.

MICHAEL
Someone seems grouchy this evening.

LOGAN
Knowing that I am going to be caged in
here for the rest of my days might be

Michael laughs and then clears his throat.

MICHAEL
Since you're up now, would you care to
tell me more about this Carrie
Clarence.

Logan shakes his head and buries his face with his palms. He
looks up to Michael with tears in his eyes.

LOGAN
I was convicted of murdering Carrie
Clarence... but I am innocent. I think
I was framed by her husband, Benjamin.
You see, I used to own a small shop
here and Ben was one of my employees.
We got into arguments all the time and
then one day, he cursed me out and I
fired him. His wife on the other hand
felt like a sister to me.
(tears come from his eyes)
We talked about life issues and family
anytime we had the chance... she
deserves to be alive.

Logan tries to wipe the tears from his face, but more form.
Michael puts both of his hands on Logan's shoulders.

MICHAEL
Listen Logan, I know that you want to
get out of prison, but the authority,
the guards and the warden do not care
if you are innocent or not at this
point. What they care about is
punishing you for the crime you were
convicted of. I believe you. I do. I
know that you want to get out now, but
right now, you need to focus on
survival because there is a good
chance they never even think about
helping you prove your innocence.

Michael looks at a crack near his bed. He focuses his

attention on the big crack that looks weak and soft.

INT. PRISON CELL - NIGHT MOMENTS LATER

Michael turns around to smile at Logan.

LOGAN
Could you please tell me more about
your story? I want to know more about
your past.

Michael's smile fades as he looks at the crack again. He

makes eye contact with Logan again.

MICHAEL
I cannot tell you much, but I will say
that I have been very remorseful for
my crime. Every night, I hear the
cries of my victim in my sleep and his
pleas. I feel like I am haunted by his
spirit...

Michael struggles to finish his sentence as he starts choking

up and forming tears in his eyes. Logan puts his hand on
Michael's shoulder. Michael looks up to Logan before taking a
deep breath.

MICHAEL
(slowly)
I wish that I could take back that day
every day that I am in here... I threw
my whole fucking life away that
moment. But worst of all, I took the
life of an innocent man. I wish they
would just execute me.

Logan hugs Michael after he finishes his speech. Michael

returns the hug while sobbing.

INT. PRISON COMMON AREA - DAY

Logan sweeps the floor as Michael mops the other side.

Michael takes a moment to go to Logan while he is sweeping.
Logan hears some cackling behind as he is sweeping. He looks
behind and he sees Rex and his henchmen surrounding Michael.

REX
(holds the pocketknife)
So an old fart like you is going
around taking things away from me and
my boys? Shouldn't an old geezer like
you know not to take things that don't-

Michael spits in Rex's eye before he could finish. Rex reacts

by punching Michael in the face. The inmates stomp on his
body. Logan sees this and runs toward them.

LOGAN
(screaming)
No!

An inmate pushes Logan to the ground where his head lands on

top of the table. The inmate that pushed him stood over him.

INMATE
If you know what's good for you, your
ass will stay down there until we are
finished.

The inmate walks over to join the others to beat Michael to a

pulp. Michael's nose was broken, he had two black eyes and he
was bleeding from head to toe. Rex grabs Michael and puts him
in a choke-hold position. Rex puts his arm around Michael's
throat and puts the blade right next to his throat.

REX
(whispering)
I did over hear that you wish you were
executed last night. Well...
(shouting)
wish granted!

Rex severs Michael's throat with the knife. Blood gushes out
of Michael's body as his lifeless body limps down on the
ground. Logan watched Michael fall to the ground. He gets off
the ground and charges at Rex.

LOGAN
(screaming)
You motherfucker!

Rex punches Logan in the face and Logan gets knocked to

ground again. Rex stands over him as he looks Logan in the
eye.

REX
(calmly)
You must be the old geezer's buddy.
You should have just swept the floor
like a good boy.

Rex stomps on Logan's face.

FADE OUT

INT. PRISON INFIRMARY - DAY

Logan opens his eyes. He sees Dr. Esma, the prison medical,

coming toward him.

DR. ESMA
I wouldn't move if I were you. You
have some balls to stand up to that
gang.

LOGAN
(glancing around)
Where is Michael Rogers?

Dr. Esma looks over a body covered up in a sheet stained with

blood.

DR. ESMA
(coldly)
He's dead. You're lucky that you
didn't join your friend.

Logan glares at the doctor with one eye open and the other
covered with an eye patch. Dr. Esma looks away as Logan tries
to get out of the bed. He jolts back in his bed.

LOGAN
He can't be... he has to be alive... I
had to be dreaming.

Dr. Esma lifts the covers off the body. It shows what is left
of Michael's bruised body with his throat severed. Logan
stares at the body with wide eyes. He shakes his head as he
frantically looks around. Logan takes another look at the
remains of his only friend in prison.

INT. BEN'S HOUSE - DAY

Ben sits on his couch with his son as they are watching
Shrek. Ben and Steve giggle throughout the ending of the
film. As the credits role, Ben gets up and Steve follows him.

BEN
Alright little buddy! It's time to go
to bed!

Steve nods before he looks at a picture of his mom.

STEVE
Daddy? What happened to mommy?

BEN
Steve, it's time to go to bed. This is
not the time to talk about it.

Steve walks towards his door. As he is about go in his room,

he turns around to face his father.

STEVE
Daddy, can you please tell me about
mommy?

BEN
(shouting)
Enough! Go to your room right now!

Steve frowns as he slowly turns around and opens the door and
goes in his room. Ben frowns as he looks down on the floor.
He goes to Steve's room and he knocks.

INT. STEVE'S ROOM - DAY

Steve hears his dad knock on his door.

STEVE
Y-Yes dad?

Ben walks in the room and toward Steve.

BEN
Steve, I'm sorry for yelling at you.

STEVE
(cowering)
Where is mommy? Why hasn't she come
back yet?

Ben looks at the picture of him and his wife next to Steve's
bed

BEN
She... is in a better place. She is
not going to come back for a while.

STEVE
What do you mean she won't comeback?

BEN
(sighing)
I don't want to talk about it right
now buddy. Maybe tomorrow.

STEVE
Please?

Ben shakes his head and glares at his son.

Sorry dad! I'll go to bed!

BEN
(smiling)
Goodnight champ.

Ben walks out Steve's room and shuts the door. Steve turns
and looks at a picture of Ben and Carrie together and tears
run through his eyes as he clutches his teddy bear.

INT. PRISON CELL - NIGHT

Logan looked down on the empty bunker where his friend used
to sleep. Tears run down his face as he sobs quietly. He
grabs the sheet on his bed and he tears it up. He wraps the
tore up sheet around his neck. He looks for a hook and he
motions toward a small hook when he sees it. Before he can
put the sheet on the hook, he falls off of his bed hits the
ground with a THUD. He glances around while rubbing his head
when he sees a hole on the wall next to his friend's bunk.

INT. PRISON CELL - NIGHT MOMENTS LATER

GUARD
(screaming)
You rotten scumbag! I know what you're
up to!

Logan turns around immediately, only to hear the screaming at

the cell next to him. He hears a beating and groans outside
his cell and tenses up. He digs through the hole more
quickly. When it becomes big enough, he tries to crawl
through it, but he hears footsteps and the same guard walks
by. The guard looks at Logan's cell where the guard sees the
prisoner asleep and the hole covered up by the tore up sheet.
The guard looked at the cell for a minute before walking out
of the prison.

LOGAN
(to himself)
Damn... that was close.

Logan pushes the sheet out of the hole. Logan gets on his
knees on the bed and gets in a crawling position. He goes in
the hole. As he squirms, he struggles to stay quite, but he
manages to slip through the hole. The hole has gotten much
bigger.

EXT. SAN DIEGO PRISON - NIGHT

Logan gets off the ground as he feels the sand on his body.
He looks at the bed-sheet that he took out of the building
with him. He tries to fill the gap in the hole, but it leaves
a tiny hole that leads to the outside world.

LOGAN
(laughing)
Good enough.

As Logan gets up, he sees the barb-wire fence surrounding the

area. Logan walks into the yard when he sees someone with a
flashlight coming. Logan sneaks to a dark area where he
cannot be seen. The guard comes toward the area as he hears a
noise at the side of the prison entrance. The guard walks
toward the area where he hears the noise.

GUARD
Hello? Is anyone there-

Just as he gets to the area, his sentence is cut short when

Logan WHACKS him in the head with a brick. The guard falls
down in one blow. Logan strips the guard of his cloths so he
can take them for his own. He also grabs the guards pistol
and baton and puts into the uniform pocket. He takes the
wallet and sees the officers identity. The identity shows
that the guard's name is CRAIG ROGERS. Before he leaves,
Logan puts his head on the unconscious guard's chest and
hears a pulse.

LOGAN
(whispering)
Still breathing. No hard feelings man.

Logan strips of his prison uniform and puts on the guard

uniform. He walks away from the body and towards the exit.

INT. SAN DIEGO COUNTY JAIL FRONT DESK - NIGHT

Logan, dressed up in the guard uniform, walks in the building

and starts walking to the exit, but two officers stop him
right as he reaches the door.

OFFICER 1
Where do you think you're going?
Aren't you suppose to be on duty?

OFFICER 2
You don't look familiar. When have you
started working here?

Logan glances around the area. He backs up a little bit as

the officers get closer.

OFFICER 1
Wait a minute... Are you-

LOGAN
(interrupting)
Guys! Officer Craig is passed out on
the field! He needs our help!

The the officers look at each other in disbelief. Their

mouths are wide open.

OFFICER 1
(shouting)
What are we waiting for?! We got to go
help him!

OFFICER 2
I'm right behind you!

The two officers exit to the door that leaves the field,
leaving Logan behind. Logan stays there and watches as the
two men run out. Logan turns around and quickly walks out of
the exit in the opposite direction.

EXT. SAN DIEGO CITY - NIGHT

Logan gets out of the entrance and sees no fence in his

surroundings.

LOGAN
(to himself)
Finally... freedom.

Logan sprints away from the area and goes directly into the
woods. He maneuvers through the trees and bushes quietly and
quickly. He keeps going until there are no buildings in
sight.

EXT. SAN DIEGO PRISON - NIGHT

The two officers arrive to the prison area and look around
with their flashlights.

OFFICER 1
(shouting)
Hello?! Is anyone here?! Craig?!

OFFICER 2
Hey man, I think I found him.

The two officers approach the area near the fence to see
Craig's unconscious body where he is wearing only his
underwear. The back of Craig's head is bleeding. One of the
officers shakes him and Craig slowly opens his eyes.

CRAIG
Where am I?

The officers looked at each other before looking at Craig

OFFICER 2
You were past out. Another guard told
me that you were here on the ground.

Craig nods. He turns around and he sees a bed-sheet in the

wall of the building. The two officers look to the area as
well. One of them pushes the sheet in the cell and it
revealed that there is a hole in the jail cell. They look
inside and the prisoner is gone. Craig looks to his left and
sees a prison uniform on the ground.

CRAIG
Don't just stand there you two idiots!
Find the escaped prisoner!

OFFICER 1
Yes sir!

OFFICER 2
Yes sir!

The two officers run into the building and the alarm goes
off. Craig looks at the giant hole again and looks at the
prison uniform before slowly getting up. He shakes his head
as he limps to the prison office while putting his hand over
his bloody wound.

EXT. THE WILDERNESS - SUNRISE

Logan walks through the area full of trees and water. He

looks around as he keeps walking. He feels cold as he crosses
his arms together. He see nothing but trees, water and grass
in the area he is at. He looks up to see the sun go up. He
smiles at the light shining down.

LOGAN
(to himself)
At least it is not prison.

Logan continues to smile and look toward the sun. He sits on

the grass and takes a deep breath.
