INTRODUCTION
Ragging is now defined as an act that violates or is perceived to violate an
individual student's dignity. After experiencing the evil of ragging, a student
develops a feeling of revenge for his unjustified harassment and derives pleasure
in ragging his juniors on his turn. So the trend goes on and students continue to
suffer. A section of students feel that light ragging should be allowed in
educational institutions, while some are totally opposed to the idea and demand
stricter punishment for those involved in it.

OBJECTIVE
To understand the underlying phenomena of students' opinions on cause and
effects of ragging in colleges.

LITERATURE REVIEW
1) Title: “Ragging: A public health problem in India”
Ragging is any disorderly conduct, whether by words spoken or written, or by an
act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any
student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which cause or are likely to
cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension
thereof in a fresher or a junior student and which has the effect of causing or
generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the
psyche of a fresher or a junior student.( Rajesh garg(2009))
2) Title: “Ragging: Let's say NO to it”
On 7th March 2009, Aman Kachroo, 19, a first-year undergraduate student of Dr
Rajendra Prasad Medical College complained to his parents about the brutal
ragging on campus by completely drunk third-year students. He was beaten so
badly that he died of brain hemorrhage. In India, resistance against ragging has
grown only recently. Several states have passed legislation banning ragging, and
the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India none has taken a firm stand to curb it. It has
been declared a “criminal offence”. (Chetna Desai(2009))

DATA COLLECTION
For our above mentioned problem we have made 5 statements that will help us
to understand students' opinion on ragging in colleges. Survey was done in the
KBS campus and data was put into excel sheet. The survey was conducted on
Likert scale with strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree. Then
the responses was quoted as +2,+1,0,-1,-2. Mean, Standard deviation, Standard
error, Central limit were calculated. Confidence level was taken as 95% & Z=1.96.
Below are the five statements which were included in the survey:
Statement 1 :- I feel that students do rag intentionally.
Statement 2 :- I feel that students do rag because they have mental problem.
Statement 3 :- I feel that students do rag just for fun.
Statement 4 :- I feel that being ragged leads to the depression.
Statement 5 :- I feel there should be death penalty for ragging.

DATA ANALYSIS
The data collected after the survey was entered into excel and then Mean,
Standard Deviation (SD) , Standard Error (SE) and Z were calculated.
Below table shows us the value of Mean, SD, SE and Z for the 5 statements:

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q5
Mean(X) 1.07 -0.02 1.20 1.21 -0.21
Standard Deviation(SD) 1.02 1.26 0.94 0.90 1.28
Standard Error(SE) 0.10 0.13 0.09 0.09 0.13
Central Limit(z) 10.52 -0.16 12.73 13.41 -1.64

CONCLUSION
1) Students accepted that raggers do rag intentionally.
2) Students are Neutral towards the fact that raggers do ragging due to mental
problem.
