Educational Administrator is an individual who is responsible for directing the teaching

curriculum of an educational institution as well as supervising the works of instructors and other
education-related staffs such as librarians and laboratory technician. Educational administrator
should be organized, innovative, and enthusiastic and should also have strong communication
and interpersonal skills. Educational administrators are playing great role in an organization to
improve performance because they establish a platform of interaction with parents and students
concerning academic progress also the play a leading role to promote the success of all students
by understanding, responding and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal and
cultural context (Fiore, 2004). The following are the basic functions of educational administrator
and the ways on which they could improve performance.

Planning is the main function of educational administrator which involves all activities required
to achieve a desired goal. Planning in an education organization should be meaningful,
manageable and useful, for instance at schools planning should be flexible in responding to
student’s interest and educational administrators should share planning with parents so as they
can benefits from knowing what they are working on and to know the strategies for improving
school performance. Furthermore the better performance of education organizations like
colleges, schools and universities need educational administrator who is responsible to plan
purpose, mission, vision and goals of an organization as well as defining objectives of an
organization, establishing the policies and procedures required to achieve them for the future
(Kochhar, 2011).

Commanding is another function performed by educational administrator where he or she


supervises activities, support staff, teachers, counselors, librarians, and other employees to
perform their tasks at school to improve student’s performance. Commanding is important
function in education organization for forming an educational organizational system and
establish figure of authority in various environment and simplifying decision making. For
example educational administrators can use commanding authority to command teachers and
other employees to develop and implement academic programs and monitor students’
educational progress with intention of improving performance. It has been noted that good
commanding and assigning of tasks from educational administrator to subordinates influences
proper allocation and utilization of educational resources and better performance of students.

Coordinating function is another important function performed by educational administrator
where he or she integrates all activities, responsibilities performed by teachers and other
employees to ensure that the resources of an organization are used most efficiently in pursuit of
the specified objectives. For example in an education organizations like colleges and schools
educational administrator work in hand with all the departments in an integrated manner so that
they can use resources available adequately for instance teaching materials, maintain discipline
of students, medias support teaching and learning process and sport and games equipment are
coordinated to enhance better performance (Norton, 2008).

Organizing function involves establishment of effective authority relationship among selected


work, person and workplaces in order for the employees to work together effectively. In well-
organized school educational administrator play a role to improve performance of the school
through handling relationship with parents, students and community as well as ensure proper
allocation and utilization of available human and material resources. For example headmaster at
secondary level is responsible to organize their fellow teachers to perform duties and tasks
assigned from head office such as teachers to attend classroom session accordingly and motivate
students through creation of collaborative inclusive learning environment so as to improve the
school performance (Kochhar, 2011).

Control and supervision function refers to the ensuring that all activities in an organization are
performed as per the plans while supervision involves monitoring activities in an organization. It
a task of educational administrator to control activities according to the rules and regulation.
Since control involves setting certain performance standards for the employees and constantly
evaluating their job performance it create an atmosphere of order and discipline in the education
organization which helps to minimize dishonest behavior among teachers and other employees.
Moreover it shape students to behave properly and foster improvement in academic performance.

Therefore In an education organization an educational administrator is responsible to supervise


teachers, and other employees to ensure that necessary duties are accomplished in reaching plans
and goals set by organization. Through this effort different schools, colleges and universities are
more likely to attain good performance simply because every participant will perform the tasks
assigned accordingly.
