DANG GOOD DESIGN TECHNIQUES

Visual storytelling isn’t something you learn overnight, it takes years to become a good designer. However, even if you’re new to

the design world there are a few things that you can do to quickly up your design game in only a matter of minutes. To help on

your next design we’ve put together a list of 5 design tips for beginners. Enjoy!

1. KERN YOUR TYPE

Kerning is simply the distance between two letters. Typically when you are working on a design you want to make sure to adjust

each individual letter so that there is equal spacing between characters. Kerning is a huge part of being a Modern Designer and a

really fast way to take your designs up a notch. This fun game will help you learn how to kern.

2. EQUAL SPACING
Since we’re on the topic of spacing let’s talk about the distance between your design elements. There’s no doubt that you are

going to have trouble laying out all of your design elements into your frame. One technique that you can use to help with the

layout process is to simply shoot for consistent spacing between your design elements. We typically enjoy using guides, shapes,

or rulers to help us with figuring out the right distance.

3. KEEP IT LEGIBLE
When you’re working with typefaces it’s important to pick a font that is easy to read. Luckily for us there are hundreds of great

fonts that are easy to read on screen. Here’s a few that work great:

• Bebeas Neue
• Avenir
• Brandon Grotesque
• Helvetica Neue
• Lato
• Futura

• … (Just Kidding)

4. USE A COLOR PALETTE

One of the best ways to give your design a visual pop is to use a good color palette. There are tons of resources online for picking

the right palette, but the important thing to remember is that color is another tool for telling your story. Make sure your color

evokes the right message to your audience. Check out Coolors.co. It’s the easiest color pallette site to use. You can also use Adobe

Color to integrate palettes with your Creative Cloud library.

5. REMIX YOUR INSPIRATION

Whether you consciously know it or not, none of the ideas you have are actually original. It’s sad, I know. Instead ideas tend to come

from a combination of past experience and inspiration. So instead of locking yourself in a closet until you emerge with a masterpiece,

go online and look for designs that you really like. Combine ideas together and inevitably you will create something new.

(BONUS) IT’S NOT THE SIZE THAT MATTERS...

It’s very common for someone new to Motion Design to overcrowd their video frame with large text, shapes, or elements.

This isn’t always a bad thing, but you don’t want to crowd the frame too much. Make sure you have a hero object that stands

out and takes center stage, the other objects in the scene should compliment it. Take a look at professional Motion Designer’s

work and you’ll typically find that the majority of artists use design elements that are much smaller than you’d think to keep

elements from competing with one another.
