This Indian Standard was first published in 1962 on methods of sampling and physical testing of refractory materials, Asa result of experience gained during these years, certain modifications have been made in the methods of sampling, methods of physical test and the method for the determination of the warpage in refractory materials. ‘The Sectional Committee while issuing this revision felt it desirable to issue the standard in separate parts. Other parts of this standard published so far, cover the following: PartI Determination of pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) or softening point Part IT Determination of refractoriness under load Part III Determination of spalling resistance PartIV Determination of cold crushing strength Part V Determination of modulus of rupture Part VI_ Determination of permanent change after reheating Part VII_ Methods of sampling and criteria for conformity Part VIII Determination of apparent porosity Part IX Determination of true ecike gravity and true density Part X__—- Determination of size of refractory bricks Part XI_ Determination of warpage Part XII Determination of bulk density Part XIV Determination of sieve analysis 8 IS : 1528 (Part XII) - 1974 0.3 In reporting the result of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. 1, SCOPE 1.1 This standard (Part XIII) prescribes the method of test for determination of resistance to the disintegrating effect of carbon monoxide. 2, TERMINOLOGY 2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 4041-1967} shall apply. 3. METHOD 3.1 Apparatus — A wire-wound furnace suitable for use at 450 to 500°C shall be used. A source of carbon monoxide, a manometer, a flowmeter and means for the disposal of carbon monoxide shall be required. The furnace tube may be of heat-resisting glass to permit easy observation of the test 3] ae a source of nitrogen for purging furnace tube atmosphere shall also be ne . : 3.2 Test Specimens — Two test specimens shall be cut from the centre and from the exterior of the two individual refractory bricks or shapes and shall be ground to approximate shape of 50 mm long cylinder with a minimum diameter of 30 mm or any suitable rectangular or prismatic shape which can be accommodated in the furnace. 3.3 Procedure — Take carbon monoxide from a gas cylinder or generate in the laboratory from formic acid and sulphuric acid or by passing the carbon dioxide froma cylinder over charcoal heated to 1 000°C in a tube furnace. Purify it by passing at a constant rate of 2 litres per hour through a purifying train to remove carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapour. Purify the nitrogen also for purging, in the same way. Use magnesium perchlorate, silica gel or phosphorus pentoxide but not sulphuric acid or calcium chloride for the removal of water vapours. Include a manometer and flowmeter in the gas train prior to the entrance of the gas into the furnace. Place the two test specimens in the furnace tube and heat to 450°C in a stream of nitrogen and then pass the carbon monoxide. Examine the test specimen from time to time for general discolouration, carbon deposition at separate nuclei and cracking. Continue the test for 100 hours or until the test pieces disintegrate, whichever is the shorter period. Reckon only the time during which the hot test pieces are exposed to the stream of carbon monoxide. Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). Glossary of terms relating to refractory materials, 4 IS : 1528 (Part XII) - 1974 3.4 Report — Report the result in the following terms for each test specimen : a) The test specimen was not disintegrated after hour’s exposure to carbon monoxide at 450 to 500°C, b) Carbon deposition was noticed after....hour’s exposure to carbon monoxide at 450 to 500°C and ‘the test specimen and disintegrated after a total treatment of. . .. hours, 3.4.1 A short description of the appearance of each test specimen after the test shall also be-included in the report. 4, SAMPLING AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY 4.1 The procedure for sampling and the criteria for conformity shall be as laid down in IS : 1528 (Part VII)-1974*. (cthods of sampling and physical tests for reftactory materials : Part VII Methods of sampling and critera fi conformity: (foal reision).
