EXERCISE 1

A cast iron shaft ASTM-25 with an ultimate tensile strength 0f 25,000 psi, is subjected to a torsional load which is
completely reversed. The load is to be applied an indefinite number of cycles. The shaft is 2” in diameter and is joined to
a 3” diameter shaft whit a 0.5” radius fillet. The factor of safety is to be 2. What is the maximum torque that can be applied
to the shaft? Solve by two ways:

1) Using Soderberg’s equation

2) Using 𝑆𝑆 =Tc/J

EXERCISE 2

A steel cantilever member is subjected to a transverse load at its end that varies from 10 lb up to 30 lb down as an axial
load varies from 25 lb (compression) to 10 lb (tension). Determine the required diameter at the change of section for
infinite life using a factor of safety of 2. The strength properties of the material are:

- Su= 80,000 psi (ultimate strength)

- Sy= 68,000 psi (yield strength)
- SE’= 40,000 psi (endurance limit)

Test data indicate that the theoretical stress concentration factor for bending and axial loads are Kt= 1.44 and Kt= 1.63
respectively, at the change of cross section.

EXERCISE 3

The bar shown is machined from steel with Sy= 420 MPa and SU= 560 MPa. The axial force F is completely reversing.
Estimate the value of the force amplitude which will cause a failure at 100,000 cycles
EXERCISE 4

Estimate the number or cycles to failure if the magnitude of the force in problem 3 is 50 kN.

EXERCISE 5

A mechanical part is made of steel with the properties SU= 560 MPa, SY= 490 MPa and SE= 210 MPa. The part is subjected
to a bending stress that alternates between 100 and 200 MPa. Determine the equivalent reversing stress and evaluate
the factor of safety corresponding to a life of 500,000 cycles.

EXERCISE 7

The machined steel shaft shown is purely reversed bending. The endurance limit of the materials, as predicted from a
standard from a standard rotating beam fatigue test is 350 MPa . The ultimate tensile strength of the material is 700 MPa.
Estimate the maximum value of the bending moment for which the cyclic life of the shaft is indefinite.
EXERCISE 8

Para el ejemplo anterior considere Sy= 560 MPa y que sobre el eje actúa un momento completamente reversible de 100

¿Es el criterio de cedencia de Goodman excedido?

EXERCISE 9

A solid round bar, 25 mm in diameter, has a groove 2.5-mm deep with a 2.5-mm radius machined into it. The bar is made
of AISI 1018 CD steel and is subjected to a purely reversing torque of 200 N · m.
Estimate the number of cycles to failure.
