Background There is a jumper on the front of all LCN node power supplies (PS). This
jumper has three positions and should always be in the center (Normal)
position. The power supply should never be turned on with the jumper in
the LOW or HIGH position. This is the 5 volt DC margin jumper. In the
LOW position, it sets the 5 volt output to 4.75 volts or 5% low. In the HI
position, it sets the 5 volt output to 5.25 volts or 5% high. These jumper
positions are used for factory test on new systems. This tests for any
marginal components on the boards installed in the node. Under normal
operation the 5 Volts should be within +/- 10 mV at 50% load. Starting in
2003 new power supplies were shipped with no jumper installed as it
is not required in the field.
Action This is a test that normally should not be done in the field as it does put
the voltage out of specification. It is possible that older boards may not
operate at this higher or lower voltage but will be fine at the correct
voltage. The power supply is designed to shut down if the voltage
regulator fails to maintain the voltage at 5.0 volts.
Jumper The original 5/10 slot power supply had a three position rocker switch. The
Configuration center position is normal operation (NOM). All power supplies since then
use a jumper plug that shorts two pins. See Figure 1 for a typical jumper.
You will not see the pin numbers, they are shown for reference only. There
are four pins. Shorting the left or right two will set the 5 Volts DC to one
margin. Shorting the center two pins (2 & 3) is normal operation. The center
two pins are common so this is effectively only a storage position. The
jumper can be removed to prevent it being in the wrong position. This
will leave it in the normal mode. Since 2003, PS are shipped with the jumper
removed.
