To be honest, “day one” of a motion picture scoring session never fails to scare the hell out of me.
Each is expensive, costing about what a day of principal photography does, and with tight post-
production schedules and limited availability of studio space, it becomes very problematic if the
music disappoints and needs to be reworked or reconceived. Practical matters aside, movie music
lag with a pinch of the ambivalence a person my age might feel about yet another birthday
rolling around...and you have a sense of my headspace as I stepped into London’s Air Studios
on Rosslyn Hill (that’s right Da Vinci Code fans, “Rosslyn”) on Wednesday March 1, 2006
I was greeted to the session with something completely unique in my experience. A 99-piece
orchestra playing “Happy Birthday.” Big fun, but what followed that day proved an even better
birthday gift.
The recording session included five major cues which encompassed all of composer Hans
Zimmer’s major themes. They were powerful, fresh and wonderfully effective. It was great news.
Like every other facet of this movie, the score for Da Vinci Code demanded a range of textures
that recognized and reinforced the layers of ideas and emotion which unfold as the basic story
does. The challenge tends to stimulate creative excitement, and some deep seated anxiety.
Hans, who has made a career of taking on one creative high wire act after another, faced his
complicated task in the manner you would expect of any great German artist...with masochistic
glee. I’ve seen him suffer and rejoice and then throw out his work and start over again, and the
result is something quite memorable. Music which creates suspense, excitement, and reflects
the souls of the lead characters allows the audience to join those characters as they face the
unknown and the unknowable.
Once again, the inspired Hans Zimmer has given us extraordinarily memorable music to
appreciate within the framework of a film or completely on its own, where you can let the
sounds carry you on your own private journey. Enjoy.

is illusive, even magical. It’s very hard to understand why it works, or explain why it doesn’t. It is
one area of the process where I, even as an experienced film maker, feel like the final outcome is
slightly beyond my control. Add to the usual anxiety the heightened sense of responsibility all of
us on the Da Vinci Code film-making team had felt throughout the process...toss in a dose of jet
