Frankenstein’s Monster

The horror story “Frankenstein” is written by Philip Pullman who explores the consequences of
human desires and Victor Frankenstein is the main character of the story. He has great urge to
serve the humanity through modern approaches; however, his limited knowledge to understand
different scientific phenomenon and its influence on human lives is the great hurdle in achieving
his goals. The book revolves around the influence of limited knowledge on our personal life,
surroundings, and the society; the limited knowledge can create more damages to already
complicated life. Frankenstein’s scientific experiment results in the deaths of his beloved ones.
The act started when Victor was up to an idea of creating something dangerous in his laboratory;
Victor and his friend Clerval were entering in the laboratory silently one night. The room was
decorated in a way which provided a suspicious image of the laboratory to readers. Victor has a
secret which created an urge in him to use his room as a workplace. On his mother’s grave,
Victor was interested to conquer death; however, his peers called him a madman.

Victor along with his friend Clerval meets Waldman, a professor who warns them to not to
create abomination. The grand idea of monster creation was Victor’s obsession from the age of
14. After Waldman’s death and a fellow student’s death, Victor built a creature and gave him
life; however, later he repented on his decision and tried to kill that creature or monster with an
axe. When the university stopped funding Victor, he himself continued the project into his
room where he used to dig the dead bodies without informing their families. He became heartless
and moral-less while dealing with dead bodies. He used to comment ruthlessly on dead bodies
which might shock a normal person. He was so obsessed to achieve his dreams that there was no
way back. He created a character named as “Monster” which he considered a perfect human
being. Victor did not consider the after effects of his creature and he wanted to play god by
creating artificial lives. After monster’s creation, Frankenstein did not like his creation at all as
he thought the creation has unacceptable appearance. He shouted and was disappointed and
regretful in his creation.

This consequence was because of his ruthlessly playing the role of god; this is the reason, he
wanted to kill that monster. That monster needed love and affection just like a new born baby,
however, Frankenstein heartless behavior failed to recognize monster’s innocence. He did not
like his own creation and wanted to kill him immediately. The monster was left unwanted and he
started to roam around without proper directions. The monster has been living an emotional and
painful life; the only thing he learnt from the life is to be heartless just like his creature and kill
other people. This is the reason he was transformed into cold-blooded monster that was against
Victor. The monster went to Victor and asked him to provide it the happiness as he has created it.
Monster asked the Victor to create another monster like him as a companion. Victor was in a real
dilemma after seeing the miserable and lonely creature created by him.

Victor was afraid of Monster’s behavior that it would be more dreadful in future if his request is
rejected. His friends and families interfere with his promise to create a female version of monster
which filled with death and pain. Clerval and Elizabeth were unaware about the intensity of
Monster after frequent rejections and hate. Monster used to observe Victor closely so he
completed his promise of creating another monster. Hence, the Clerval and Elizabeth’s
unnecessary involvement cost them their lives. After the death of their friends, Frankenstein was
more conscious and he aimed to kill that monster before he does something wrong to him. Victor
could have taken the action in another way to prevent the disasters; however, instead of
correcting the mistakes he was kept making further mistakes. He had limited human knowledge
and he did not adopt and loved Monster. However, the Monster was willing to forgive people
and he learnt his lesson that human life is precious.

The interesting things which are learnt from the act are that science is not everything; Victor was
interested to pioneer and explore unknown powers, however, it created severe knowledge risks.
The monster created by Victor brought him to the North Pole, where he died due to hypothermia.
It does not mean that one should not progress, but, the pitfalls of scientific advancements must be
kept in mind. Another lesson learnt is that we should not play with life and death, for example,
Frankenstein started playing with nature after the death of his mother. He used to collect bones
from charnel houses by stating that “Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should
first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. I thought that if I could
bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time renew life where death had
apparently devoted the body to corruption.” The third lesson learnt is that “intending to do good
is not the same as doing good”. Frankenstein character was a warning against violence for
political ends. It is not possible to make apart the individual intentions and the end result. The
character was not intended to kill anybody, but his actions put serious consequences on him
family, friends, and personal life. The story also tells that we should not cross boundaries while
conducting scientific experiments. The technology and science has an important role in
improving our lives, however, it might unleash worse in our lives. It urges readers to consider
the scientific advancement and ethical dilemmas posed by new technologies. This book is a nice
introduction to ethical issues which might be considered in every phase of life. The monster
became dangerous when abandoned; hence, we can say that ignoring makes people ruthless and
cruel to others.
