CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the steps in the process of

the study and the methods that will be used to achieve

the objectives of the researchers. These are presented

with research designs, locale of the study, population,

research instrument, validity and reliability of the

study, data gathering procedure, scoring guidelines and

statistical tool.

Research Design

The study made use descriptive design which deals

with the data in a statistical way and also deals with

the thoughts or views of the students.

Locale of the Study

This study be conducted at Camiguin National High

School, Looc, Catarman, Camiguin.

Population of the Study

The respondents of this study were the Grade 11

students of Camiguin National High School (CNHS). By

using Sloven’s Formula: n=N/1+Ne where n is the total

population and e is the estimated error which is 5%. It

makes the study easier to determine how many respondents

will be. The study have 232 total respondents of Senior

High School students under the Grade 11 curriculum. In

Grade 11, it has only six (6) sections namely: Dove- 34,

Eagle- 45, Heron-38, Sparrow- 33, Pigeon- 35 and Oriole-

47. The sample size of this study is 147.

Research Instrument

The researchers conducted the study through survey.

The survey questionnaire will be divided into two types

of questions. The first part will contain personal

information whether the respondents are male or female

while the second part will be about the perceptions of

the students regarding reading drills.

Validity and Reliability of the Study

The questionnaire was validated by three (3)

experts. For its reliability, the researchers conduct

pre-test and post test.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers sent a request letter to the

principal and teacher asking a permission for students

considered as respondents. When it will be approved, the

research will start and the researchers will personally

administer the distribution of questionnaire to assure

veracity of data that will be gathered. After it has been

accomplished, it will be scored, tallied, tabulated and

interpreted.

Scoring Guideline

In the analysis of the students’ perceptions on

reading drills. The researchers made use of the five-

point Likert Scale with the statistical limits

descriptive equivalents and symbols as follows.

Table 1. Four-Point Likert Scale

Arbitrary Descriptive
Value Limit Equivalent Symbol

Strongly
4 3.26-4.00 Agree SA

3 2.51-3.25 Agree A

2 1.76-2.50 Disagree D

1 1.00-1.75 Strongly SD

Statistical Tool

The gathered data were analyzed carefully so that

the information will be reliable and unbiased. The

following tools will be used to attain the interpretation

of data.

Frequency Count. This tool was used to describe the

respondents’ profile.

Likert Scale. This tool was used to determine the

perceptions regarding reading drills.
