THE RIGHT

fixing
4
When you need to make a fixing in concrete, this is where your journey through
the world of fasteners begins. As a manufacturer of fasteners we have a respon-
sibility and we will help to choose the right fixing as easy as possible.
We know that a fixing will be successful and secure if one follows certain princi-
ples and installation instructions.
Our quick course provides information about our different products, their charac-
teristics and how they differ in a coherent and easy way.
What construction material What external conditions What type of loads will
is the fixing being made in should the fixing be able the fixing be exposed to?
and what are the qualities to deal with?
of the base material?
5
A The most important factor when selecting a
fastener is the base material
The most common materials within the construction industry are the
following:
6
B External conditions – environment
Always select the fixings that are suitable for the corrosion
conditions of the environment where the work is carried out.
Corrosion
Corrosion means a change and degradation of metals due to the effects of the
environment. Corrosion has a significant impact on the durability of the fixing.
Corrosion reveals itself as ”rust”, but the corrosion can also be concealed in the
construction.
Galvanic corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two metals are in contact with each other in the
presence of an electrolyte (moisture). A current occurs that dissolves the less
susceptible metal (corrodes). Rust spreads quickly when corrosion takes hold.
In order not to compromise the durability of the fixing in the long-term, the
fastener must always be the part of the joint least susceptible to corrosion.
For outdoor installation we therefore always recommend fasteners made of
austenitic stainless steel.
Fasteners' lifetime
In order to establish the lifetimes of fasteners, field trials have been carried out on
the most commonly used fasteners.
The analysis mainly shows from a safety perspective, and with reference to
lifetime and future maintenance costs, that only fasteners made of austenitic
stainless steel A2/A4 should be used in outdoor environments and can withstand
all corrosivity classes.
Fasteners must always have similar or longer service lives than the materials
they are fastended to.
7
Factors that are important to evaluate when choosing fasteners:
• The fastener's expected lifetime, in most cases at least 50 years or at least the
same lifetime as the material they are fastened to.
• Galvanic corrosion. The fastener must always be the part of the joint least
susceptible to corrosion.
• Galvanised or other inorganic coatings should only be used on bases that do
not affect the coating's effectiveness when installing.
To meet all the requirements for corrosion, safety and economy, it is recommend-
ed that fasteners made of austenitic stainless steel A2/A4 are used for outdoor
installation in all corrosivity classes.
Inorganic surface coatings are suitable for wood bases and applications
where the surface coating is not damaged during installation.

C The fixing's permitted loads
Load types
The size and direction of loads are not always constant. Therefore, reference
should be made to other types of loads and be evaluated from case to case,
depending on application and safety.

D Installation requirements & technical descrip-
tions of fixings in concrete
What is cracked concrete?
Compressive Compressive
load uncracked concrete load uncracked concrete
A concrete slab resting on support pillars creates micro-cracks from the tensile
stresses caused by its own weight and loads. In order to take up these tensile
stresses, the slab must be reinforced in order not to compromise the durability of
the construction.
Fixings that are made in constructions with cracked concrete must be made
with fasteners approved for use in cracked concrete. The micro-cracks that are
present, limit the fixing's load capacity. Therefore consideration must be made of
the loading values given in the product information. If the fastener is suitable for
cracked concrete, this is always stated in the product information. Select an ETA
assessed product Option 1 for installation in cracked and uncracked concrete.
Concrete quality
Site cast concrete is normally C20/25 quality with a compressive strength of 25N/mm².
Prefabricated concrete is normally C32/40 quality with a compressive strength of
40N/mm² or higher, for example C50/60.
Variations in concrete quality affect the durability of the fixing but also affect
the installation conditions when selecting drill hole diameter etc.
The drill hole diameters that are recommended apply to concrete of C20/25
quality. For higher concrete quality, the drill hole diameter can be increased
slightly to create good installation conditions.
10
For fixings in aerated concrete
Aerated concrete screws are installed without any pre-drilling. The thread length
of the screw and the screw-in depth, as well as the aerated concrete's density,
age and quality, affect the pull-out value.
Therefore, we always recommend to carry out a pull-out test. The fasteners
must be installed at very low speed and not overtightened.
ETA assessment
As the name suggests, ETA (European technical assessment) is a more technical-
ly orientated evaluation, which is based from the product in its area of use or in a
specific application.
Tests and certification must be carried out by an European approved certification
body.

Installation tips!
To reach the stated resistance
values, no installation torque is
required other than to hold the
installed component in place. The
stated max. installation torque
must never be exceeded, because
the risk of damage to the screw
can lead to future screw fracture.
1. Drill a hole according 2. Clean the hole with 3. Install the screw with an
to the instructions the brush and pump impact screwdriver. Must
not be tightened beyond
the stated max. tightening
torque

1. Drill holes to the instructed drill diameter ∅ 5.0 mm 2. A concrete screw is not dependent on how hard one

prefabricated concrete, the diameter of the drill hole not exceed the stated maximum tightening torque, 5 Nm.
may need to be increased until one can achieve an There is otherwise a risk that the screw will be damaged
acceptable screw-in torque which could lead to the screw fracturing

Aerated
concrete
screws
No pre-
drilling
With aerated concrete screws you can screw directly into aerated concrete,
without pre-drilling.
Note that large differences in the pull-out values can occur depending on old
or newly produced aerated concrete. Newly produced aerated concrete is also
available in different densities, which effects the pull-out value. Higher density
gives higher values. The thread length of the screw and screw-in depth also
affect the pull-out value.
Many factors therefore affect the screw's pull-out value in aerated concrete.
Therefore, we always recommend that a pull-out test is carried out. It is also
important that the installation is done at low speeds to avoid overtightening.
