Training and development describes the formal ongoing efforts that are made within
organisations to improve the performance and self-fulfillment of their employees through a
variety of educational methods and programs. Training programs have specific goals such as
operating of machinery, understanding a specific process or performing certain procedures whilst
development on the other side concentrates on broader skills that are applicable to a wider
variety of situations such as decision making, leaderships skills and goal setting. However it is
against this background that benefits are accrued both to the organization and the individual
member. The essay to follow will dwell much on the benefits of training and development to
both the organisation and the employee. These benefits include job knowledge and skills,
increased performance and productivity, customer satisfaction, saves costs, improves morale,
reduces need for supervision just to mention but a few.
When an employee is trained and developed in customer care services, the organisation will
benefit in that there will be increase in performance and productivity. Thus the company will
have profits and surplus for expansion thereby building their cooperate image. Hence increase in
efficiency in processes resulting in financial gain. The increased competition in the global
market place makes it very crucial that employees understands and meets the needs of customers.
Therefore it is important to train employees when a performance appraisal indicates the need for
improvement in performance.
A trained employee has the capacity to adapt to new technologies and methods, being innovative
in strategies and products. Due to technological advancement in the global market, employees
need to be trained so as to catch up with time. Computer skills are becoming a necessity for
conducting administrative and office tasks. Hence if the employees are trained, there will not
face problems in executing their daily duties. They can easily adapt to new technological
changes thereby benefiting the organisation as a whole as tasks will be finished on time thereby
2
meeting deadlines. There will be financial gain and good co-operate image as customers like to
do business with companies that are time conscious.
Trained employees enhances the company’s image as they have knowledge on good ethical
conduct. The knowledge helps the employee to know good ethical behavior with customers of
the environment from which the business is being conducted. This is because the society has its
expectations from the employees to the company as a whole. Hence if trained then information
about the need to conduct cooperate social responsibility in the area of business will be known.
The organisation will benefit as the co-operate image is uphold thereby retaining customers
leading to profitability and expansion. Therefore through training, the diverse workforce bring a
variety of values and morals to the workplace will not affect the image and reputation of the
company.
Training and development helps in better ways of communication in the workplace either
between customers or suppliers with employees and employer management relationship. It helps
deal with grapevine at the workplace thereby increasing productivity and morale as information
will be communicated effectively to all bodies involved. Training in different languages benefit
the organisation as there is increased diversity of today’s workforce brings a wide variety of
languages and customs. This improves the relationships between superior and subordinate and
customers with the organisation as well. Eventually it leads to increased sales and high morale
of the workforce.
Reduces need for supervision as job knowledge and skills of employees at all levels are
improved and thus increase the level of performance for duties. This will reduce costs in the
long run as there will be no need to employee supervisors as supervisors are developed. It also
helps develop employee potential and increase customer satisfaction. Therefore it is essential to
equip employees with adequate knowledge needed for them to conduct their daily duties as this
will benefit the organisation at most.
Training and developing employees on human relations helps to reduce the increased stresses of
the workplace such as conflicts and misunderstandings. Hence it makes people get along as it
3
moulds employees attitudes to achieve support for business activities and obtain better co-
operation and greater loyalty. Therefore it leads to a reduction in input material wastages and the
improvement of machine utilization.
The business climate is improved as labour management relations are improved through training
of the code of conduct in the industrial area. Information gained will help employees to know
their fundamental rights and their obligations what is expected of them. The procedure to be
followed when aggrieved either by sexual harassment or social problems, training which gives
detail of the organisation’s policies and appropriate behaviours expected adds the fair business
climate for both employees, customers and employer.
Safety training helps reduce risks and accidents that are life threatening and dangerous to the
business environment thus reducing operational problems. It is very crucial when working with
heavy equipment, hazardous chemicals and repetitive activities. Safety is critical to
organizational and financial performance. It enables employees to work without fear for their
lives and health thus job security.
According to Marmer, C, (1999), employees must have access to continual training of all types
just to keep up. Thus if one doesn’t actively stride against the momentum of skills deficiency
one is bound to lose, if workers stand still the organisation will lose the competency race.
Therefore in conclusion team building, employee engagement, customer care brings many
benefits and should be taken into consideration. Hence through qualified instructors and
carefully controlled learning situations companies can enjoy shortened learning periods resulting
in high productivity, less turnover, absenteeism, accidents and grievances rates.
