QUESTION 1 (35 marks)

BOTSWANA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

1.1 Explain size reduction in your own words [2]

1.2 What are the purposes of size reduction? List five (5) [5]
1.3 List four (4) advantages and disadvantages (each) of size redution [8]
1.4 Discuss four (4) factors that affect the material size reduction process? [8]
1.5 With the aid of diagrams, discuss the mechanisms of size reduction [12]

QUESTION 2 (35 Marks)

2.1 Discuss with the aid of diagrams any three (3) particle size reduction equipment [30]
2.2 Discuss the stages of size reduction for a sample of run of mine [5]

QUESTION 3 (55 Marks)

3.1 With the aid of equations, state your understanding of crushing efficiency. [10]
3.2 Theories or laws to predict the power required to crush materials depend on the energy required to
produce a change in particle size. Discuss the following laws/theories (with equations) on predicting the
energy required to cause particle size reduction:
 Bond’s law
 Rittinger’s law
 Kick’s law
[45]
QUESTION 4 (25Marks)
Having discussed the laws in the previous question, attempt the following problem:
A material is crushed in a blake jaw crusher such that the average particle is reduced from 65mm to
15mm with consumption of energy of 15kW/ (kg /s). What would be the consumption of energy needed
to crush the same material of average size 75mm to an average size of 25mm:
4.1 Assuming Rittinger’s law applies [10]
4.2 Assuming Kick’s law applies [10]
4.3 Which of the results can be regarded as more reliable and why? [5]
