Document Development Exposition: White Paper

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
For the White Paper assignment, I began by researching as much as I could that had to do with issues
in Hawaii that impact endangered species. After getting an idea of the issues, I picked out the top
three reasons and went in depth with research such as the problems and solutions. One of the
challenges I went through was the lack of information provided with certain topics. Pollution,
deforestation, and construction, all had connections that were very similar, which made it difficult to
bring up different points to why endangered species are in trouble in Hawaii. After spending hours of
researching and receiving the same information, I decided to find a way to overcome the challenge. I
began to use the information to make indications and use it in my White paper. For example, I talk
about how cutting down trees leads to pollution, which leads to decrease of reproduction, which
then leads to endangered species, and then extinction. If a certain species goes extinct, the
consumer may also become endangered and the cycle continues. I began to include the assumptions
and indications from research. Throughout the planning process, I learned that presenting the
audience with facts is not enough. The more you explain the facts, the better your drafts will
become.

First Draft (for peer editing)

I started working on my first draft from what I found through my research. I was not close to being
complete, however I tried to get much as done as possible with my best effort. After feeling satisfied
with what I had completed so far I submitted my work on the Discussion Board, knowing I still had
minor changes to make. The challenges I faced was not having the pictures formatted the way I
wanted them to look and shortage of time. I have not had to do many assignments that required
pictures included in a report or an essay, so I had trouble formatting. The image would move around
or move my text around when I typed, which was messing up my paper. I overcame the challenge
through researching online how to fix the issue and asked one of my friends how to fix the issue as
well. The time was also an issue, because that week I had a lot going on such as submitting
paperwork for nursing schools and extended hours at work. I overcame the challenge by staying up
late during the night than usual to complete as much as possible and researching more to add onto
the second draft. Through Peer Editing suggestions, I also made changes such as adding more
headers to section the information. From this assignment, I learned that Google Docs provides a
Contents of Table for you with page numbers. I did not know that before until one of my friends told
me after spending thirty minutes on trying to make it look like one of my peers, because it seemed
very professional. After learning that Google Docs provides the table for you, it made my page look
much better than what I created first before knowing. This assignment taught me a very helpful tool
to use.

Second Draft (for your packet)

I did several changes to my second draft after the Peer Review. The Peer Review is very helpful,

especially in this assignment since it was a writing assignment that needed headers to separate
sections. I added more images after I was suggested to do, which caused the same issue as I
mentioned in my first draft, which I solved using the same method. Another challenge I ran into was
that I felt as if I was repeating myself over and over again, including in my conclusion. To overcome
the issue, I reread my work to see how I can improve my work. I realized that I was overloading my
readers with information, therefore I decided to take some sentences out, so I can have a good wrap
up for my conclusion. I learned a lot about how to present information through this assignment.
Through the struggle of repetitive information, I learn about how much to present information in
simple language and what to save for the conclusion, which allows the audience to keep wanting to
read instead of losing interest.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

For my final draft I corrected a few errors and made a big change about how to solve the problem. I
had a misunderstanding of the topics that should be included in the report. My report was a
problem, future problems, and how the solution solves the problem instead of the problem, the
solution, and how the solution solves the problem.I realized that I accidentally twisted the
assignment and did not discuss the solution as much as the rubric asked for. The challenges I faced
during the final draft was formatting the visual aids as asked in the first lecture video. Every time I
tried to edit or reform the picture, it would mess up my whole text. I overcame my challenge through
repositioning the image in a way it would not mess anything up and researching online. I learned a
lot about formal reports through this assignment. I learned about how figures must be mentioned in
the text if it is presented and the importance of elaboration of the topic in the summary.
