TEZLA
I don’t know why we keep failing.
I’ve built a new kind of car, the
fastest in the world...
GIG
Maybe you should build a new kind
of driver.

TEZLA
A new kind of driver...

TRACKING VERT
ALEC (O.S.)
<A STARTLED YELP>
VERT
Bummer.
ANGLE ON ALEC
VERT (cont’d)
Next time you want to lose to me,
Alec, try surfing. Water’s a lot
softer.
ALEC
We ought to get up a team, Vert.
Surf or skateboards, either one --
we could hustle some money.
VERT
Haven’t you heard? I’m a team of
one.
VERT (cont’d)
Later.
WIPE TO:
3.
VERT
What’s up, dad?
MAJOR WHEELER
My squadron’s shipping out -- high
alert.
VERT
You were going to take me to get my
driver’s license.
MAJOR WHEELER
I can drop you off at the testing
center, Vert, but I don’t have time
to wait for you.
ON VERT
VERT
I’ve been waiting sixteen years.
VERT (cont’d)
Anyway -- what’s the use of having
a license without a car?
MAJOR WHEELER
Look, I’m sorry I have to go --
especially on your birthday. But
I’ve got a responsibility to my
squadron. We’re a team --
4.
VERT
You said as soon as I was sixteen,
I could drive the car.
MAJOR WHEELER
Skateboards, surfing -- now cars.
Some day you’ll find out what’s
really important.
VERT
You mean more important than what I
want.
MAJOR WHEELER
You can’t always do what you want.
You have to think about other
people.
VERT
I’m going to be the best driver in
the world.
MAJOR WHEELER
I don’t have time for this now,
Vert. Do you want me to drop you
off or not?

CLOSE ON VERT
VERT
Yeah. Thanks.
DISSOLVE TO:
VERT
Whoa! Check it out!
ON THE DEORA II
Looking out through the open door, as Vert looks in. A flat,
unsupported screen dissolves into being below the rear view
mirror. After a beat, the screen crackles to life and
TEZLA’S FACE appears, looking straight ahead. CONTINUOUS
ENGINE IDLING SFX.
TEZLA
Greetings. Because of your
extraordinary abilities, you have
been chosen to take part in the
World Race.

TEZLA (V.O.)
Drivers with unique skills are
being recruited from all over the
world.
CUT TO:
TEZLA
Some with experience at the highest
levels of professional racing.
CUT TO:
TEZLA
And others whose full talents have
not yet been discovered.
PULL BACK AND WIDEN THE ANGLE to include Vert, sitting in the
car now, with the ENGINE IDLING, looking at Tezla.
TEZLA (cont’d)
I’m looking for the greatest driver
in the world. If that’s you, then
follow the map on the GPS screen.
DISSOLVE TO:
TEZLA (V.O.)
Welcome to the Handler Proving
Ground.
DISSOLVE TO:
TEZLA
I see that you’ve all found your
driving suits.
TEZLA (cont’d)
My name is Peter Tezla. I’m the
founder and president of the SCRIM
Corporation.
END PAN on Vert and Taro. Vert is admiring his own suit,
including the driving helmet, which he holds in his hands.
VERT
Cool.
TEZLA
The driver who wins will be
declared the fastest racer in the
world -- and will receive five
million dollars.
VERT
Way cool.
(to Taro)
What would you do if you had that
kind of money?
TARO
(disdainfully)
I do. And I’ve done it.
Taro walks OUT OF THE SHOT. Vert looks at Lani and shrugs.
WIPE TO:
TEZLA (V.O.)
The cars are equipped with special
Nitroxx2 boosters.
9.
KURT
Grand Prix wasn’t this fast!
CUT TO:
TEZLA (V.O.)
And each car has special equipment
to handle a different type of
terrain.
END PAN on Vert’s car and Lani’s car, side by side. Lani
looks out the side window at Vert.
LANI
Hey, Vert -- since we’ve both got
Wave Ripper cars, maybe we should
be a team.
VERT
Forget it, Lani. I’m a team of
one.
10.
BOOSTER JETS FIRE beneath it and make it jump into the air.
VERT (cont’d)
Whoa! Check it out!
Vert FIRES HIS BOOSTER JETS again and again, making his car
jump into the air over and over, like a kid playing with a
new toy.
WIPE TO:
VERT (V.O.)
(over the radio)
Hey -- you’re Taro Kihara, right?
At the controls.
TARO
Twice. I’m going to pass you.
VERT
That’s what you think.
VERT (cont’d)
Whoa -- wrong switch!
TARO
This isn’t a game, kid. You’re a
driver now -- not a surf rat.
VERT
(muttered, to himself)
Who are you calling “kid”?
The chute retracts into the car, and he follows Taro. PUSH
IN on the Highway 35 sign, now lying on the ground.
TEZLA (V.O.)
I call the track Highway 35,
because that’s where it begins.
DISSOLVE TO:
TEZLA (O.S.)
But it’s older than our roads --
older than human history.
TEZLA (cont’d)
It was built eons ago by
technologically advanced beings,
perhaps from another planet --
KURT
(dubiously)
Accelerons?
GIG
Now tell them the unbelievable
part. <ELECTRONIC SNICKERING>
13.
WIPE TO:
TEZLA (V.O.)
The track exists in a different
dimension from our own -- a
dimension you won’t see until the
race begins.
The red light is lit. Someone has hung the battered old “35”
highway sign on the pole below the lights.
REVS HIS ENGINE and looks out the window at the other cars.
BANJEE
Hey, Taro -- you think this guy
Tezla knows what he’s talking about
-- or is he just loco?
TARO
It took a genius to build these
cars, Banjee.
14.
KURT
(quietly, to himself)
He could be a genius -- and still
be insane.
With the “35” sign in the FG. The lights above change from
red to amber.
As the whole line of cars takes off across the salt flats.
As the cars ROAR PAST OS, the pole shakes and the “35” sign
is buffeted by the backwash, CLATTERING against the pole.
15.
At the controls.
KAREEM
I think maybe we’re the crazy ones!
Tezla must be lying!
VERT
Let’s find out!
FADE OUT.
END OF ACT ONE
16.
ACT TWO
VERT
Where are we?!
TARO
Tezla was right. It’s another
dimension.
KAREEM
Never have I seen such rocks!
VERT
Forget the rocks, Kareem --
17.
KURT
(whispered, to himself)
It’s still a track -- and that’s my
world.
As Kurt’s car swerves and BANGS into Vert’s car, sending Vert
into a spin --
VERT
Hey -- watch it, Kurt!
As he spins off the track and BANGS into the wall of the
canyon.
VERT (cont’d)
A wipe out like that --
CUT TO:
BANJEE
I’m not gonna make it!
KURT
We don’t have enough speed for that
jump!
Looking up at Vert.
BANJEE
You think you can take that loop --
you better think again!
VERT
What’s the matter, Banjee -- didn’t
you ever grind a half pipe in the
rain forest?
He throws a lever.
Vertical on the loop -- when his BOOSTER JETS FIRE and flip
his car around, so that it’s facing down the loop.
20.
TARO
He’s doing it to pick up speed.
Racing through the bottom of the loop and up the other side.
Watches Vert.
KURT
Nobody beats Kurt Wylde.
Taro’s car ROARS up the other side of the loop. Then Vert’s
car races down the other side at incredible speed and heads
for the ramp.
From deep in the canyon: Vert’s car sails off the ramp and
across the canyon.
VERT
Come on! Come on!
Vert’s car flies INTO THE SHOT and lands on the far side, its
rear wheels right on the edge --
WIPE TO:
At the controls.
TARO
No skateboard tricks now, kid.
Just driving.
VERT
Who are you calling kid?!
Vert’s car BANGS into the side of Taro’s car, and both of
them SKID and spin off the track.
TARO
<A GRUNT OF IMPACT>
CUT TO:
At the controls.
BANJEE
This is nothing, Kareem -- when
you’ve ridden a moto over the
Andes, like me!
23.
Racing down the spiraling track, down into the crater. PAN
AWAY to look deeper into the crater: headlights from another
car can be seen on the track, ahead of them, far below.
The car takes off down the track with a ROAR. PAN AND PUSH
IN on the Nitroxx2 canister: a LIGHT BLINKS on a small device
attached to it, and we hear a FAINT BEEPING SOUND.
At the controls.
KAREEM
When you’ve driven in a sandstorm
in the Sahara, Banjee -- this is
nothing!
Kareem’s car and Banjee’s car ROAR out of the smoke and past
the fuel tank -- just before it EXPLODES, right behind them.
24.
Vert’s car ROARS over the edge of the crater and starts
spiraling down.
Lava is gushing from the wall and GURGLING down the side of
the crater. The crater wall is beginning to give way, lava
pushing through the cracked rock, sending boulders ROLLING
down the side.
FADE OUT.
END OF ACT TWO
25.
ACT THREE
Racing down the track -- as the wave of lava curls over it,
hiding it completely.
At the controls, as the whole car is filled with the red glow
from the lava wave curling over it.
VERT
Pipeline! Shoot the curl!
ROARING down the track TOWARD THE CAMERA, with the wave of
lava curling over it. The wave finally closes -- right
behind Vert’s car.
VERT (cont’d)
Yeah!
TARO
Tezla said this car can handle
volcanos.
LANI
I can follow the path he’s
clearing.
Taro’s car reaches the edge and gets back onto the track,
leaving glowing red tracks behind it.
She starts down the cleared path through the lava flow -- but
suddenly the path closes around her as the lava flows across
it. The car tilts as the lava current carries it sideways,
completely helpless.
LANI (cont’d)
I’m losing it!
CUT TO:
At the controls.
27.
VERT
I can still win this race!
LANI (V.O.)
(static-filled radio)
Can anybody hear me?! I need help!
CUT TO:
TARO (V.O.)
(radio, with STATIC)
Lani -- this is Taro. I --
(it’s lost in STATIC)
VERT
Yeah -- Taro will help her.
CLOSE ON VERT
VERT (cont’d)
But what if he can’t...
CUT TO:
UPSHOT ON THE LAVA - pouring over a cliff and down into the
lower parts of the crater, like a waterfall made of molten
rock. Lani’s car is carried over the edge and falls OUT OF
THE SHOT, engulfed in molten lava. It looks like Lani is
gone -- but as we CRANE UP we reveal Lani standing on a
boulder with lava flowing all around her.
LANI
This is an interesting problem.
ANGLE ON LANI
The boulder SHIFTS toward the edge, and Lani stumbles and
falls.
LANI (cont’d)
<A STARTLED CRY>
TARO
It’s too heavy...
29.
VERT (V.O.)
(over the radio)
Grab Taro’s grappling line, Lani!
VERT (cont’d)
Now unhook your line, Taro!
TARO
If I do, the boulder goes over the
edge.
ANGLE ON LANI
LANI
Do it, Taro! Vert knows what he’s
doing!
The BOOSTER JET FIRES under the front of Vert’s car, making
it do a wheelie, jerking the grappling line and jerking
Taro’s car back --
30.
ANGLE ON LANI
Jerked into the air at the end of the grappling line (just as
the boulder lurches over the edge of the lava falls) --
As Lani tumbles INTO THE SHOT and lands safely on the track
near Taro’s car.
ANGLE ON LANI
TARO
(into his radio)
That was good driving -- for a kid.
Smiles.
VERT
You might make a pretty good surf
rat yourself.
DISSOLVE TO:
KURT
There’s the portal! The finish
line!
CUT TO:
31.
KURT
What happened? Didn’t I win?
TEZLA (V.O.)
This is not the end of the World
Race. It’s only the beginning.
DISSOLVE TO:
TEZLA (O.S.)
The first leg of the race was a
test of your cars --
TEZLA (cont’d)
-- and also of your individual
skill as drivers. But from now on,
you will race as teams.
32.
TEZLA (cont’d)
As the winner of the first leg of
the race, Kurt Wylde will have
first choice of six new drivers for
his Street Breed team.
VERT
Whoa -- time out.
ANGLE ON TEZLA
VERT (cont’d)
I don’t want to be on a team -- and
I sure don’t want to lead one.
TEZLA
You either race as a team leader --
or not at all.
TEZLA (cont’d)
Do you have the courage to continue
the World Race -- into a world
that’s totally unknown?
TARO
I’m in.
BANJEE
Yeah -- me too.
33.
KAREEM
Do we still win five million
dollars?
ANGLE ON TEZLA
TEZLA
Five million, for every member of
the winning team --
TEZLA (cont’d)
-- and the knowledge that you’re
the fastest racer in the world.
VERT
I’ll lead one of your teams -- if
that’s what it takes to win the
race.
TEZLA
Good. Now that you’ve decided to
continue --
TEZLA (cont’d)
-- I can tell you what really waits
for you at the end of Highway 35.
FADE OUT.
