WORLD RACE
Episode 1: “Ring of Fire”
Written by Mark Edens

EXT. “HIGHWAY 35” - DAY

CONTINUOUS SHOT - A RACE CAR’S POV - Racing down the track at

incredible speed, a view from a camera on the front of a car,
with the CONSTANT ROAR OF AN ENGINE. The track swoops up in
a giant loop-the-loop, goes vertical -- and we come off it,
tumbling through the air, spinning wildly, catching a glimpse
of the track, the sky, the ground fall below, hurtling toward
us -- until suddenly the SCREEN BECOMES STATIC. We PULL BACK
TO REVEAL that we’ve been watching a video screen in --

INT. TEZLA’S LAB - NIGHT

TIGHT ANGLE ON PETER TEZLA - an eccentric genius about forty

years old, staring at the video screen. The STATIC is
reflected in his steel-rimmed glasses.

TEZLA
I don’t know why we keep failing.
I’ve built a new kind of car, the
fastest in the world...

WIDEN THE ANGLE to include a computer on a work table behind

him, monitor and keyboard all in one piece, with a video
camera on the side of the monitor that SWIVELS to look at the
video screen. On the computer monitor is a voiceprint that
moves as the computer talks. Its name is GIG.

GIG
Maybe you should build a new kind
of driver.

CLOSE ON TEZLA

Thinking, with the STATIC still reflected in his glasses.

TEZLA
A new kind of driver...

CUT TO:

EXT. OCEANFRONT SKATEBOARD PARK - DAY

UPSHOT ON VERT - as he rides PAST THE CAMERA on a skateboard

and straight up into the air off the end of a curving
vertical wall. He spins in the air a couple of times and
ends up facing down --
2.

ANGLE ON VERT AND ALEC

ALEC WOOD is another skateboarder, older, more muscular,

tougher: he and Vert are doing the same acrobatic moves on a
big concrete half pipe. Both of them start down the side
again -- but Alec hits off-balance and pitches forward --

TRACKING VERT

Rolling rapidly down the slope and up the other side, as we

hear a THUD OS and:

ALEC (O.S.)
<A STARTLED YELP>

Vert looks back as he goes vertical again and spins again.

VERT
Bummer.

ANGLE ON ALEC

Sprawled on the concrete, with his skateboard nearby. Vert

rolls INTO THE SHOT and stops deftly, jumping off his
skateboard and flipping it into the air and catching it.

VERT (cont’d)
Next time you want to lose to me,
Alec, try surfing. Water’s a lot
softer.

Alec gets to his feet, rubbing his arm.

ALEC
We ought to get up a team, Vert.
Surf or skateboards, either one --
we could hustle some money.

VERT
Haven’t you heard? I’m a team of
one.

Vert tosses his skateboard onto the ground, steps on it.

CHANGE THE ANGLE as he ROLLS away.

VERT (cont’d)
Later.

WIPE TO:
3.

EXT. VERT’S HOUSE - DAY

WIDE ON THE HOUSE - A modest California-style bungalow.

Vert’s fortyish, crewcut father, MAJOR WHEELER, hurries
toward the car in the driveway. He’s wearing an Air Force
uniform and carrying a no-nonsense suitcase. Vert rides up
on his skateboard.

TIGHTER ON MAJOR WHEELER

As he stows his suitcase (what would a major have? Would it

be a suitcase, a trunk, or one of those military duffle
bags?) in the trunk. Vert rolls up, stops, and flips his
skateboard into the and catches it.

VERT
What’s up, dad?

MAJOR WHEELER
My squadron’s shipping out -- high
alert.

VERT
You were going to take me to get my
driver’s license.

MAJOR WHEELER
I can drop you off at the testing
center, Vert, but I don’t have time
to wait for you.

ON VERT

Reacting with disappointment.

VERT
I’ve been waiting sixteen years.

ANGLE ON VERT AND MAJOR WHEELER

Major Wheeler CLOSES THE TRUNK.

VERT (cont’d)
Anyway -- what’s the use of having
a license without a car?

MAJOR WHEELER
Look, I’m sorry I have to go --
especially on your birthday. But
I’ve got a responsibility to my
squadron. We’re a team --
4.

VERT
You said as soon as I was sixteen,
I could drive the car.

MAJOR WHEELER
Skateboards, surfing -- now cars.
Some day you’ll find out what’s
really important.

Major Wheeler walks toward the driver’s door, OUT OF THE

SHOT. Vert looks away.

VERT
You mean more important than what I
want.

ANGLE ON MAJOR WHEELER

As he OPENS the driver’s side door.

MAJOR WHEELER
You can’t always do what you want.
You have to think about other
people.

Vert steps INTO THE SHOT, a bit defiant now.

VERT
I’m going to be the best driver in
the world.

MAJOR WHEELER
I don’t have time for this now,
Vert. Do you want me to drop you
off or not?

WIPE TO:

INT. DMV - DAY

ON VERT - slumped in a chair, with his skateboard in his lap,

looking at his license. A sign on the wall behind him reads:
“DRIVER’S TESTING -->”

DMV CLERK (V.O.)

Wheeler?
(he looks up)
You made a perfect score on both
the written test and the driving
test.
5.

CLOSE ON VERT

Looking at the license.

DMV CLERK (V.O.) (cont’d)

Your father must be very proud of
you.

Vert looks straight ahead.

VERT
Yeah. Thanks.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. VERT’S HOUSE - DAY

TRACKING VERT - riding his skateboard down the sidewalk.

Suddenly he sees something up ahead, reacts with surprise.

VERT
Whoa! Check it out!

He stops, flips his skateboard into the air, catches it.

ON THE DEORA II

A sleek race car, parked in the driveway. Vert walks INTO

THE SHOT and opens the driver’s side door -- and the ENGINE
STARTS WITH A ROAR. He steps back, startled.

INSIDE THE CAR

Looking out through the open door, as Vert looks in. A flat,
unsupported screen dissolves into being below the rear view
mirror. After a beat, the screen crackles to life and
TEZLA’S FACE appears, looking straight ahead. CONTINUOUS
ENGINE IDLING SFX.

TEZLA
Greetings. Because of your
extraordinary abilities, you have
been chosen to take part in the
World Race.

CUT TO:
6.

EXT. THE SAHARA DESERT - NIGHT

WIDE ON KAREEM - pushing up his goggles and staring in

amazement at his Wild Thing racer, gleaming in the light of
the enormous desert moon in the BG. We hear the DESERT WIND
as it blows sand by the camera.

TEZLA (V.O.)
Drivers with unique skills are
being recruited from all over the
world.

CUT TO:

INT. KURT’S CAR - NIGHT

KURT - sits in the driver’s seat of his Slingshot racer (we

hear the ENGINE IDLING), his face lit only by the dim glow of
the heads-up display, as Tezla continues:

TEZLA
Some with experience at the highest
levels of professional racing.

CUT TO:

XT. VERT’S HOUSE - DAY

TIGHT ANGLE ON TEZLA - in a windshield heads-up display.

TEZLA
And others whose full talents have
not yet been discovered.

PULL BACK AND WIDEN THE ANGLE to include Vert, sitting in the
car now, with the ENGINE IDLING, looking at Tezla.

TEZLA (cont’d)
I’m looking for the greatest driver
in the world. If that’s you, then
follow the map on the GPS screen.

Vert ponders: should he do it?

ON THE FLAT SCREEN

7.

The image of Tezla CHANGES to show a map with a BLINKING spot

on it, on a road labeled “HIGHWAY 35.” PUSH IN CLOSER until
the blinking spot FILLS THE SCREEN --

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. TEZLA’S HQ - DAY

LONG ON THE MAIN BUILDING - LOW ANGLE - An enormous,

windowless black building, larger than an airport hangar.
Vert’s car ROARS OVER THE CAMERA AND INTO THE SHOT, heading
for the building.

TEZLA (V.O.)
Welcome to the Handler Proving
Ground.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. TEZLA’S HQ - DAY

WIDE ON THE BUILDING - A vast, dimly-lit space. Ten race

cars (including all the ones we’ve already seen) are parked
in the building. The drivers stand nearby: Vert, Kareem,
Kurt, Taro, Banjee, LANI TAM, REKKAS, KRAKATOA, MAXIMO, and
ESMERALDA, looking up at a huge viewscreen mounted on the
wall: on the screen is the face of Peter Tezla. (NOTE: The
drivers all wear their World Race driving uniforms.)

TEZLA
I see that you’ve all found your
driving suits.

UPSHOT ON THE VIEWSCREEN

Showing Tezla looking down at us.

TEZLA (cont’d)
My name is Peter Tezla. I’m the
founder and president of the SCRIM
Corporation.

DOWNSHOT ON THE DRIVERS - PANNING PAST THEM SLOWLY

So that we see them one after the other, listening.

TEZLA (O.S.) (cont’d)

I’ve invented the most advanced
racing technology the world has
ever seen.
8.

END PAN on Vert and Taro. Vert is admiring his own suit,
including the driving helmet, which he holds in his hands.

TEZLA (O.S.) (cont’d)

In the World Race, you will take
this technology to its limits --
and beyond.

VERT
Cool.

Taro gives him a disdainful look.

WIDE ON THE GROUP

Including Tezla on the viewscreen.

TEZLA
The driver who wins will be
declared the fastest racer in the
world -- and will receive five
million dollars.

ON LANI, VERT, TARO

VERT
Way cool.
(to Taro)
What would you do if you had that
kind of money?

TARO
(disdainfully)
I do. And I’ve done it.

Taro walks OUT OF THE SHOT. Vert looks at Lani and shrugs.

WIPE TO:

EXT. SALT FLATS - DAY

DOWNSHOT TRACKING KURT’S CAR, MAXIMO’S CAR, ESMERALDA’S CAR -

racing across the salt flats at incredible speed.

TEZLA (V.O.)
The cars are equipped with special
Nitroxx2 boosters.
9.

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

With Maximo’s car visible outside the window. Kurt throws

the Nitroxx2 lever, and with a BOOM and a WHOOSH his car
surges ahead, past Maximo’s car, with Kurt pressed back
against the seat.

KURT
Grand Prix wasn’t this fast!

CUT TO:

INT. TEZLA’S HQ - DAY

PANNING PAST A LINE OF CARS - beginning with Banjee’s car --

which has a WHIRLING SAW-LIKE FLAIL deployed from the front
of the car...

TEZLA (V.O.)
And each car has special equipment
to handle a different type of
terrain.

...CONTINUE PANNING past Kareem’s car, as knobs DEPLOY from

his tires for traction in deep sand...

TEZLA (V.O.) (cont’d)

The cars I call Desert Ratz can
operate in the deepest sand --

...CONTINUE PANNING past Taro’s car, as titanium steel

shields DEPLOY, covering his tires, and a steel snow-plow-
like device extends from the front of the car...

TEZLA (V.O.) (cont’d)

-- while a Scorcherz car can drive
through the heart of a volcano.

END PAN on Vert’s car and Lani’s car, side by side. Lani
looks out the side window at Vert.

LANI
Hey, Vert -- since we’ve both got
Wave Ripper cars, maybe we should
be a team.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

VERT
Forget it, Lani. I’m a team of
one.
10.

He throws the booster lever on his control console --

ANGLE ON VERT’S CAR

BOOSTER JETS FIRE beneath it and make it jump into the air.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Is JOLTED as the car lands. He looks excited.

VERT (cont’d)
Whoa! Check it out!

He throws the booster lever again --

WIDE ON VERT’S CAR AND LANI’S CAR

Vert FIRES HIS BOOSTER JETS again and again, making his car
jump into the air over and over, like a kid playing with a
new toy.

WIPE TO:

EXT. AN OLD HIGHWAY - DAY

DOWNSHOT EXTREME WIDE ON THE HIGHWAY - cracked asphalt

running through the salt flats, with Vert’s car racing down
it, as Taro pulls up behind him.

VERT (V.O.)
(over the radio)
Hey -- you’re Taro Kihara, right?

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

At the controls.

VERT (V.O.) (cont’d)

(over the radio)
Somebody told me you skied down
Mount Everest once.

TARO
Twice. I’m going to pass you.

Taro SHIFTS GEARS.

TRACKING TARO’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

Taro’s car starts to accelerate around Vert’s.

11.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Looks back at Taro as he reaches for his Nitroxx2 lever --

VERT
That’s what you think.

-- but accidentally hits the drag chute lever instead. He

looks at it, realizing he’s made a mistake.

VERT (cont’d)
Whoa -- wrong switch!

DOWNSHOT TRACKING TARO’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

As a DRAG CHUTE DEPLOYS from the rear of Vert’s car. Vert’s

car is jerked back, and Taro has to swerve to avoid hitting
him. The two cars are thrown into a spin, SKIDDING off the
road --

ON AN OLD HIGHWAY SIGN

A rusty, leaning sign for U.S. Route “35.” Suddenly Vert’s

car SKIDS THROUGH THE SHOT and knocks the sign down.

DOWNSHOT ON VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

They come to a stop beside the old highway.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Looks out the window at Vert, coldly.

TARO
This isn’t a game, kid. You’re a
driver now -- not a surf rat.

He puts his car into gear --

DOWNSHOT ON TARO’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

Taro’s car ROARS away.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Looks angry and resentful.

VERT
(muttered, to himself)
Who are you calling “kid”?

He jams his car into gear.

12.

ON VERT’S CAR - FROM BEHIND

The chute retracts into the car, and he follows Taro. PUSH
IN on the Highway 35 sign, now lying on the ground.

TEZLA (V.O.)
I call the track Highway 35,
because that’s where it begins.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. TEZLA’S LAB - NIGHT

ON A VIEWSCREEN - showing a broken stone slab covered with

squiggly carving.

TEZLA (O.S.)
But it’s older than our roads --
older than human history.

PULL BACK to reveal Tezla standing in front of the

viewscreen. The computer Gig is on a table beside him.

TEZLA (cont’d)
It was built eons ago by
technologically advanced beings,
perhaps from another planet --

REVERSE ANGLE - THE DRIVERS

Stand in a group, listening -- and looking uncomfortable.

TEZLA (O.S.) (cont’d)

-- beings that I call the
Accelerons.

Some of the drivers look at each other.

KURT
(dubiously)
Accelerons?

ANGLE ON TEZLA AND GIG

The voice print on Gig’s screen moves as he speaks:

GIG
Now tell them the unbelievable
part. <ELECTRONIC SNICKERING>
13.

Tezla gives Gig an annoyed look.

WIPE TO:

EXT. SALT FLATS - DAY

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON THE TEN CARS - in a line, as their ENGINES

START WITH A ROAR, ready to race. In front of them is a drag-
race style starting signal: a pole with three lights on it,
red, amber, and green.

TEZLA (V.O.)
The track exists in a different
dimension from our own -- a
dimension you won’t see until the
race begins.

UPSHOT ON THE STARTING LIGHTS

The red light is lit. Someone has hung the battered old “35”
highway sign on the pole below the lights.

TEZLA (V.O.) (cont’d)

When you reach three hundred miles
per hour, the portal between the
dimensions will open.

PANNING PAST THE CARS

REVVING THEIR ENGINES, ready to go.

TEZLA (V.O.) (cont’d)

Another portal at the end of the
track will return you to this
dimension.

INSIDE BANJEE’S CAR - BANJEE

REVS HIS ENGINE and looks out the window at the other cars.

BANJEE
Hey, Taro -- you think this guy
Tezla knows what he’s talking about
-- or is he just loco?

TIGHT ANGLE ON TARO’S CAR

With Taro visible inside, as he REVS HIS ENGINE calmly.

TARO
It took a genius to build these
cars, Banjee.
14.

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

Grips his steering wheel with determination.

KURT
(quietly, to himself)
He could be a genius -- and still
be insane.

UPSHOT ON THE STARTING LIGHTS

With the “35” sign in the FG. The lights above change from
red to amber.

PANNING RAPIDLY PAST THE CARS

With the ENGINES REVVING --

UPSHOT CLOSER ON THE STARTING LIGHTS

As they change from yellow to green --

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Jams his car into gear --

INSIDE VERT’ CAR - TIGHT ON VERT’S FOOT

He STOMPS on the accelerator --

TIGHT ANGLE ON VERT’S REAR WHEEL

SPINNING as he takes off --

ANGLE ON VERT’S CAR

As it takes off, WHEELS SPINNING --

ANGLE ON TARO’S CAR

As it too takes off, WHEELS SPINNING --

WIDE ON THE CARS - FROM BEHIND - CRANING UP

As the whole line of cars takes off across the salt flats.

UPSHOT ON THE STARTING LIGHTS

As the cars ROAR PAST OS, the pole shakes and the “35” sign
is buffeted by the backwash, CLATTERING against the pole.
15.

TRACKING FIVE CARS

As they pull out front of the others, five abreast: Taro,

Kareem, Banjee, Vert, Kurt.

INSIDE KAREEM’S CAR - KAREEM

At the controls.

KAREEM
I think maybe we’re the crazy ones!
Tezla must be lying!

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Reaching for the Nitroxx2 lever.

VERT
Let’s find out!

He throws the lever: BOOM! -- WHOOSH!

CLOSE ON VERT’S SPEEDOMETER

As the needle jumps up to three hundred --

WIDE ON THE FIVE CARS - FROM BEHIND

As the five cars go into NITROXX2 BOOST -- and suddenly a

PORTAL appears in front of them: a ring of FLAME-LIKE ORANGE
ENERGY, with spinning horizontal RINGS OF ENERGY on each
side, slightly in front of it. The spinning rings boost the
cars as they pass through them and slingshot them into the
portal -- and the cars disappear through it in a FLASH OF
LIGHT with ELECTRIC CRACKLE SFX.

FADE OUT.
END OF ACT ONE
16.
ACT TWO

EXT. CANYON - DAY

LOOKING DOWN THE CANYON - A track stretches as far as we can

see along a deep, narrow, barren canyon -- like a Highway 35
version of the Grand Canyon, with rocks as colorful as the
Painted Desert, and a strangely-colored river snaking along
the bottom of the canyon. A volcano rises in the distance,
against a bizarre red sky, with a dense cloud of black smoke
rising from it. Suddenly a DIMENSION PORTAL appears on the
track -- and with a sound like a CLAP OF THUNDER, the first
five cars in the race ROAR through the portal, heading
straight toward us.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Reacts with shock and amazement.

VERT
Where are we?!

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Looks around, fascinated but still cool.

TARO
Tezla was right. It’s another
dimension.

ANGLE ON THE PORTAL

As the DIMENSION PORTAL appears again, and the rest of the

cars -- Rekkas, Lani, Krakatoa, Maximo, Esmeralda -- race
through, with THUNDERCLAP SFX.

WIDE ANGLE TRACKING THE FIRST FIVE CARS

As they race down the canyon in a pack. We PUSH IN on

Kareem’s car, as Kareem looks out the side window.

KAREEM
Never have I seen such rocks!

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Leans forward, peering up through his windshield.

VERT
Forget the rocks, Kareem --
17.

VERT’S POV - UPSHOT ON THE SKY

On the weird colors and effects in the sky.

VERT (O.S.) (cont’d)

-- check out that sky!

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

At the controls, looking over at Vert’s car running near him.

KURT
(whispered, to himself)
It’s still a track -- and that’s my
world.

DOWNSHOT TRACKING KURT’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

As Kurt’s car swerves and BANGS into Vert’s car, sending Vert
into a spin --

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Struggling to maintain control, as his car starts to SKID.

VERT
Hey -- watch it, Kurt!

DOWNSHOT TRACKING THE FIRST FIVE CARS

Vert’s car spins into Kareem’s car -- BANG! -- and both of

them SKID off the track --

PANNING WITH VERT’S CAR

As he spins off the track and BANGS into the wall of the
canyon.

TIGHT ON VERT’S CAR

Vert looks out his side window, back at his car.

VERT (cont’d)
A wipe out like that --

VERT’S POV - TIGHT ON THE CAR

The side of the car, still gleaming.

VERT (O.S.) (cont’d)

-- and I hardly got dinged!
18.

EXTREME WIDE - TRACKING BANJEE’S CAR, TARO’S CAR, KURT’S CAR

Racing up the track as it climbs the canyon wall, with Banjee

pulling ahead of the others.

VERT (V.O.) (cont’d)

(over the radio)
These cars can really take
punishment!

CUT TO:

EXT. ABOVE THE CANYON - DAY

DOWNSHOT EXTREME WIDE ON THE CANYON - PANNING across the

narrow but incredibly deep canyon. END PAN on an enormous
loop-the-loop, as tall as a skyscraper. Near the loop-the-
loop is a ramp. The track continues on the far side of the
canyon from the ramp, leading toward the volcano in the
distance. SOUND OF AN ENGINE APPROACHING.

TRACKING BANJEE’S CAR

Racing toward the loop at top speed. He starts up it.

UPSHOT ON BANJEE’S CAR

Racing up the loop, starting to go upside down -- but the

loop is so big that it’s impossible to maintain enough speed
to stay on the track. Banjee’s car comes off the track and
slowly starts to fall.

INSIDE BANJEE’S CAR - BANJEE

Reacts with comic alarm.

BANJEE
I’m not gonna make it!

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON BANJEE’S CAR

It begins to fall faster, tumbling.

INSIDE BANJEE’S CAR - BANJEE

Throws a lever on his control console.

FOLLOWING BANJEE’S CAR

Falling -- as a large drag chute DEPLOYS from its rear,

slowing its descent.
19.

WIDE ON BANJEE’S CAR

It lands, heavily, beside the loop, and its chute retracts

into the car. Kurt’s car and Taro’s car ROAR past, heading
for the ramp.

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

Looks ahead, reacts.

KURT
We don’t have enough speed for that
jump!

TIGHT ANGLE ON KURT’S FOOT

He STOMPS ON THE BRAKES.

DOWNSHOT TRACKING TARO’S CAR AND KURT’S CAR

They SKID to a stop on the ramp, stopping just a few feet

short of plunging over it.

ANGLE ON BANJEE’S CAR

As Vert’s car ROARS past. CHANGE THE ANGLE to include the

loop, as Vert races up the loop.

INSIDE BANJEE’S CAR - BANJEE

Looking up at Vert.

BANJEE
You think you can take that loop --
you better think again!

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Smiles as he reaches for his booster jet controls.

VERT
What’s the matter, Banjee -- didn’t
you ever grind a half pipe in the
rain forest?

He throws a lever.

TRACKING VERT’S CAR

Vertical on the loop -- when his BOOSTER JETS FIRE and flip
his car around, so that it’s facing down the loop.
20.

DOWNSHOT ON VERT’S CAR

He races back down the loop at tremendous speed.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Looking up at Vert -- and smiling to himself as he gets it.

TARO
He’s doing it to pick up speed.

He puts his car into reverse.

DOWNSHOT ON TARO’S CAR AND KURT’S CAR

Taro backs down the ramp as fast as he can.

PANNING WITH VERT’S CAR

Racing through the bottom of the loop and up the other side.

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

Watches Vert.

KURT
Nobody beats Kurt Wylde.

He shifts into reverse.

DOWNSHOT ON KURT’S CAR

He backs down the ramp and spins 180 degrees.

UPSHOT ON VERT’S CAR

Reaching the vertical point on the other side of the loop.

Vert FIRES HIS BOOSTER JETS, and his car spins in the air and
starts back down the loop.

WIDE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LOOP

Taro’s car ROARS up the other side of the loop. Then Vert’s
car races down the other side at incredible speed and heads
for the ramp.

DOWNSHOT ON THE RAMP

Vert’s car ROARS up the ramp and off the end --

21.

UPSHOT ON THE RAMP

From deep in the canyon: Vert’s car sails off the ramp and
across the canyon.

FOLLOWING VERT’S CAR

Flying toward the far side of the canyon -- and starting to

drop. If it makes it, it’s going to be close...

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Looks nervous: he isn’t sure he’s going to make it.

VERT
Come on! Come on!

UPSHOT ON THE CANYON WALL

Vert’s car flies INTO THE SHOT and lands on the far side, its
rear wheels right on the edge --

ANGLE ON VERT’S CAR

As it bounces and SKIDS and keeps going down the track.

WIPE TO:

EXT. VOLCANO - DAY

WIDE DOWN THE TRACK - ON THE VOLCANO - in the distance, with

a column of smoke rising from it. The track leads up the
side of the volcano. Vert’s car ROARS PAST THE CAMERA AND
INTO THE SHOT, heading toward the volcano. A BEAT -- and
then Taro’s car ROARS INTO THE SHOT, following Vert.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

At the controls.

TARO
No skateboard tricks now, kid.
Just driving.

DOWNSHOT TRACKING VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

As Taro moves to pass Vert on a turn, BANGING into the side

of his car as he crowds past. Vert swerves toward the edge
of the track --
22.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Fights with the wheel, struggling to stay on the track.

VERT
Who are you calling kid?!

He swerves toward Taro --

DOWNSHOT TRACKING VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

Vert’s car BANGS into the side of Taro’s car, and both of
them SKID and spin off the track.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Is JOLTED as his car wedges against some boulders.

TARO
<A GRUNT OF IMPACT>

WIDE ON TARO’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

Kurt’s car ROARS past on the track, heading up the side of

the volcano. Vert RESTARTS HIS ENGINE. Banjee and Kareem
race past as Vert drives back onto the track.

CUT TO:

INT. VOLCANO CRATER - “NIGHT”

EXTREME WIDE ON THE CRATER - with the track emerging from a

cave-like fissure in the crater wall and spiraling down into
the volcano, winding around the walls of the crater. The
inside of the crater is dark, permanently “night” beneath the
cloud of dark smoke that hides the sun. A glare of
headlights from the fissure, and then Kareem’s car and
Banjee’s car roar into the crater and down the track.

INSIDE BANJEE’S CAR - BANJEE

At the controls.

BANJEE
This is nothing, Kareem -- when
you’ve ridden a moto over the
Andes, like me!
23.

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON KAREEM’S CAR AND BANJEE’S CAR

Racing down the spiraling track, down into the crater. PAN
AWAY to look deeper into the crater: headlights from another
car can be seen on the track, ahead of them, far below.

DEEPER IN THE CRATER - ANGLE ON THE CRATER WALL

Lit by the glare of approaching headlights. We hear the CAR

STOP OS. CHANGE THE ANGLE to reveal the car -- one we
haven’t seen before, the ZED-36 CAR, lit weirdly by the red
glow of nearby lava. (Kurt’s Slingshot car, with blacked-out
windows and a different paint job.)

WIDER ON THE ZED-36 CAR

A small canister -- like a compressed gas bottle or oxygen

tank -- labeled “Nitroxx2” is tossed out the window of the
car: it lands against the crater wall beside the track, near
a spot where a thin thread of GLOWING RED LAVA snakes down
the crater wall.

DOWNSHOT ON THE ZED-36 CAR

The car takes off down the track with a ROAR. PAN AND PUSH
IN on the Nitroxx2 canister: a LIGHT BLINKS on a small device
attached to it, and we hear a FAINT BEEPING SOUND.

TRACKING KAREEM’S CAR AND BANJEE’S CAR

Moving through darkness and smoke, headlights glaring.

Banjee’s car slows, and Kareem’s car passes it.

INSIDE KAREEM’S CAR - KAREEM

At the controls.

KAREEM
When you’ve driven in a sandstorm
in the Sahara, Banjee -- this is
nothing!

CLOSE ON THE NITROXX2 CANISTER

With the device on it BLINKING and BEEPING QUIETLY.

WIDE ON THE NITROXX2 CANISTER

Kareem’s car and Banjee’s car ROAR out of the smoke and past
the fuel tank -- just before it EXPLODES, right behind them.
24.

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON THE VOLCANO CRATER

Vert’s car ROARS over the edge of the crater and starts
spiraling down.

WIDE ON THE TRACK

Lava is gushing from the wall and GURGLING down the side of
the crater. The crater wall is beginning to give way, lava
pushing through the cracked rock, sending boulders ROLLING
down the side.

TRACKING VERT’S CAR

Racing through the smoke, with its headlights on.

UPSHOT ON THE CRATER WALL

It gives way, with a wave of thick, glowing lava pushing it

from behind, curling over the track. Vert’s car ROARS INTO
THE SHOT as the wall of lava curls over the track.

FADE OUT.

ACT THREE

INT. VOLCANO CRATER - “NIGHT”

TRACKING VERT’S CAR

Racing down the track -- as the wave of lava curls over it,
hiding it completely.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

At the controls, as the whole car is filled with the red glow
from the lava wave curling over it.

VERT
Pipeline! Shoot the curl!

FOLLOWING VERT’S CAR

ROARING down the track TOWARD THE CAMERA, with the wave of
lava curling over it. The wave finally closes -- right
behind Vert’s car.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Pumps his fist in the air with triumph.

VERT (cont’d)
Yeah!

TRACKING TARO’S CAR AND LANI’S CAR

Roaring through the smoke, using their headlights. A RED

GLOW grows ahead of them, and Lani slows, falling behind.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Sees the lava ahead and reacts.

TARO
Tezla said this car can handle
volcanos.

He throws a lever on his control console.

TIGHT ON A WHEEL OF TARO’S CAR

Titanium steel shielding DEPLOYS around the tire, covering it

completely --
26.

ANGLE ON THE FRONT OF TARO’S CAR

The front bumper CHANGES into a steel plow to deflect lava

from the car.

DOWNSHOT TRACKING TARO’S CAR

It ROARS through the lava flow, plowing a path through it

with its “snow-plow” front bumper.

INSIDE LANI’S CAR - LANI

Watches what Taro’s doing.

LANI
I can follow the path he’s
clearing.

She SHIFTS GEARS.

ANGLE ON THE EDGE OF THE LAVA FLOW

Taro’s car reaches the edge and gets back onto the track,
leaving glowing red tracks behind it.

DOWNSHOT TRACKING LANI’S CAR

She starts down the cleared path through the lava flow -- but
suddenly the path closes around her as the lava flows across
it. The car tilts as the lava current carries it sideways,
completely helpless.

INSIDE LANI’S CAR - LANI

Clings to the steering wheel as the car tilts.

LANI (cont’d)
I’m losing it!

CUT TO:

INT. THE BOTTOM OF THE CRATER - “NIGHT”

WIDE - TRACKING BANJEE’S CAR - Racing down the track, which

runs alongside a lake of glowing lava at the bottom of the
crater. Vert’s car moves INTO THE SHOT behind Banjee’s car,
gaining on it.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

At the controls.
27.

VERT
I can still win this race!

TRACKING BANJEE’S CAR AND VERT’S CAR

Vert ACCELERATES, moving to pass Banjee.

LANI (V.O.)
(static-filled radio)
Can anybody hear me?! I need help!

TRACKING TARO’S CAR

Racing down the track.

LANI (V.O.) (cont’d)

(static-filled radio)
If you can hear me --
(it’s lost in STATIC)

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TIGHT ANGLE ON TARO’S FOOT

It moves from the accelerator to the brake --

TRACKING TARO’S CAR

TIRES SCREECHING, it SKIDS 180 degrees to a stop.

WIDE ANGLE ON A TUNNEL ENTRANCE

As Banjee’s car and Vert’s car race into the tunnel.

CUT TO:

INT. TUNNEL - “NIGHT”

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT - looking troubled, as the engine

noise becomes an ECHOING ROAR.

TARO (V.O.)
(radio, with STATIC)
Lani -- this is Taro. I --
(it’s lost in STATIC)

VERT
Yeah -- Taro will help her.

CLOSE ON VERT

Looking worried. Should he do something?

28.

VERT (cont’d)
But what if he can’t...

CUT TO:

INT. VOLCANO CRATER - A LAVA FALL - “NIGHT”

UPSHOT ON THE LAVA - pouring over a cliff and down into the
lower parts of the crater, like a waterfall made of molten
rock. Lani’s car is carried over the edge and falls OUT OF
THE SHOT, engulfed in molten lava. It looks like Lani is
gone -- but as we CRANE UP we reveal Lani standing on a
boulder with lava flowing all around her.

LANI
This is an interesting problem.

ANGLE ON LANI

The boulder SHIFTS toward the edge, and Lani stumbles and
falls.

LANI (cont’d)
<A STARTLED CRY>

SOUND OF TARO’S ENGINE OS. A glare of headlights hits her,

as she looks up.

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON LANI

Taro’s car pulls up and stops on the track overlooking the

lava flow and the boulder where Lani is trapped. A GRAPPLING
HOOK LAUNCHES from the front of Taro’s car and CLANGS into
the boulder that Lani is clinging to -- just as the boulder
gives way, carried by the lava flow. The grappling line
SNAPS TAUT and holds it, keeping it from going over the edge.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Shifts into reverse.

TIGHT ANGLE ON ONE OF TARO’S REAR WHEELS

SPINNING AND SMOKING -- as the weight of the boulder drags

the car forward.

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Reacts with concern as his car shifts beneath him, tilting.

TARO
It’s too heavy...
29.

The ROAR OF AN ENGINE behind him, a glare of headlights.

DOWNSHOT WIDE ON VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

Vert’s car pulls up behind Taro’s.

VERT (V.O.)
(over the radio)
Grab Taro’s grappling line, Lani!

Vert LAUNCHES A GRAPPLING HOOK into the rear of Taro’s car,

connecting them.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

As he grabs his booster jet lever.

VERT (cont’d)
Now unhook your line, Taro!

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Shakes his head.

TARO
If I do, the boulder goes over the
edge.

ANGLE ON LANI

Grasping Taro’s grappling line.

LANI
Do it, Taro! Vert knows what he’s
doing!

INSIDE TARO’S CAR - TARO

Throws the lever to release his line --

TIGHT ON THE GRAPPLING HOOK

It releases from the boulder with a CLICK.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Throws his booster jet lever.

ANGLE ON VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

The BOOSTER JET FIRES under the front of Vert’s car, making
it do a wheelie, jerking the grappling line and jerking
Taro’s car back --
30.

ANGLE ON LANI

Jerked into the air at the end of the grappling line (just as
the boulder lurches over the edge of the lava falls) --

ANGLE ON VERT’S CAR AND TARO’S CAR

As Lani tumbles INTO THE SHOT and lands safely on the track
near Taro’s car.

ANGLE ON LANI

Getting to her feet beside Taro’s car. PULL BACK to reveal

Taro in the FG: we’ve been looking at Lani through the side
window of his car.

TARO
(into his radio)
That was good driving -- for a kid.

INSIDE VERT’S CAR - VERT

Smiles.

VERT
You might make a pretty good surf
rat yourself.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. VOLCANO - DAY

WIDE ANGLE ON A TUNNEL - Kurt’s car ROARS out of the tunnel,

leaving the volcano behind.

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

At the controls: he reacts to something he sees up ahead.

KURT
There’s the portal! The finish
line!

DOWN THE TRACK - WIDE ON A PORTAL

The track disappears into a DIMENSION PORTAL. Kurt’s car

ROARS UNDER THE CAMERA AND INTO THE SHOT and races into the
portal --

CUT TO:
31.

EXT. THE JUNGLE - DAY

ANGLE ON A PORTAL - as the DIMENSION PORTAL appears against a

backdrop of jungle foliage, back in our own world, and Kurt’s
car ROARS out. PAN with Kurt’s car as it SLIDES on the
muddy, unpaved road, makes a SLURPING SKID sideways into a
ditch, and comes to a sudden stop --

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

Is jolted by the sudden stop. He pushes open the visor of

his helmet and looks around, dazed.

KURT
What happened? Didn’t I win?

ANGLE ON THE PORTAL

As Kareem’s car emerges from the DIMENSION PORTAL. PAN with

Kareem’s car as it slips and slides through the mud past
Kurt’s car, wheels SPINNING and throwing mud --

INSIDE KURT’S CAR - KURT

Looks at the open window -- and a lot of mud flies in and

SPLATS into his face.

TEZLA (V.O.)
This is not the end of the World
Race. It’s only the beginning.

Kurt wipes mud out of his eyes, disgusted.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. TEZLA’S HQ - NIGHT

PANNING PAST FIVE CARS - Battered and scratched, the cars

driven by Kurt, Kareem, Banjee, Taro, and Vert --

TEZLA (O.S.)
The first leg of the race was a
test of your cars --

END PAN on Tezla, talking to Kurt, Kareem, Banjee, Taro,

Vert.

TEZLA (cont’d)
-- and also of your individual
skill as drivers. But from now on,
you will race as teams.
32.

TIGHT ANGLE ON TEZLA

TEZLA (cont’d)
As the winner of the first leg of
the race, Kurt Wylde will have
first choice of six new drivers for
his Street Breed team.

PANNING SLOWLY PAST THE DRIVERS

To reveal them, one after the other, as Tezla mentions their

names, beginning with Kurt, who’s still spattered with mud.

TEZLA (O.S.) (cont’d)

The other teams will be recruited
and led by Kareem Anton, Banjee
Castillo, Taro Kihara, and Vert
Wheeler.

VERT
Whoa -- time out.

ANGLE ON TEZLA

As Vert steps INTO THE SHOT, facing him.

VERT (cont’d)
I don’t want to be on a team -- and
I sure don’t want to lead one.

TEZLA
You either race as a team leader --
or not at all.

Tezla walks OUT OF THE SHOT. Vert reacts, a bit bewildered.

WIDE ON THE GROUP

As Tezla faces the rest of the drivers.

TEZLA (cont’d)
Do you have the courage to continue
the World Race -- into a world
that’s totally unknown?

TARO
I’m in.

BANJEE
Yeah -- me too.
33.

KAREEM
Do we still win five million
dollars?

ANGLE ON TEZLA

TEZLA
Five million, for every member of
the winning team --

Vert steps INTO THE SHOT behind him.

TEZLA (cont’d)
-- and the knowledge that you’re
the fastest racer in the world.

VERT
I’ll lead one of your teams -- if
that’s what it takes to win the
race.

Tezla looks at Vert.

TEZLA
Good. Now that you’ve decided to
continue --

CLOSE ON TEZLA - PUSHING IN SLOWLY

For a dramatic effect, as --

TEZLA (cont’d)
-- I can tell you what really waits
for you at the end of Highway 35.

FADE OUT.
