Summer Volunteer Service: Employer

With the most recent COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of volunteering opportunities have

been suspended or cancelled all together. Unfortunately, cancelling has been the case for the

event I am talking about today. However, I have volunteered for this event each year, for the past

3 years and a sorry to have seen it be cancelled this year.

Each spring, our cancer center holds an annual “Ladies Spring Tea” event. At the event,

we celebrate the life of women cancer survivors. Each guest is allowed to bring one guest with

them to the event. At the event, we have the area decorated with beautiful tea pots, cups, and

spring décor. Each survivor receives door prizes and we have basket raffles as well as live

entertainment. All of the proceeds from the basket raffles go to benefit cancer patients in our

hospital. We also serve refreshments, sandwiches and sweet treats to all of the guests. Towards

the end of the event, we will often have some of our physicians (both medical and radiation

oncology) come speak about survivorship and support in front of the crowd. All of the women

(and their families) seem to really enjoy seeing one another each and every year.

In prior years, I have always helped to set up for this event, helped at the event itself and

helped to clean up once the event is over. This year, the event was scheduled for April 23, 2020.

With the pandemic, the plan was to reschedule the event for the summer in a “to be announced”

manner. However, it was recently released that the event has unfortunately been cancelled all

together for safety concerns. This year would have marked the 10th anniversary of this annual

event. Hopefully, God willing, it will continue once again this coming year!
