Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I first decided on music because it is something I know well and have taught before. Based on this I
figured reading music is a simple thing to start out with and so I went over the very simple basics of
what is needed to read simple music. To do so you need to understand symbols, notes, and the staff.
From there it became figuring out how to order and flesh those out.

First Draft (for peer editing)

I started off with writing about the notes and including sections for common symbols, time
signatures, and the staff then practice in that order. I did not have the time to get very far so I only
managed to finish actually writing out the section for the notes.

Second Draft (for your packet)

The hardest part here was intermingling so many pictures with lots of inline text. Ordering it on the
page in a format which looked professional and aesthetically pleasing was difficult. I learned a lot
about the different settings with images in Microsoft office. I found an open source software that
would let me write music which was very helpful for the practice section.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

My final draft ultimately needed to be cut down as it was too wordy. Cutting it down wasn’t too
hardy as I just removed a lot of the unnecessary language I had to try and make it feel more
conversational. I feel the reason I went the conversational route in the first place is because I was so
used to teaching music in person and that bleed over into my writing.
