Problem-01: Determine the skin friction capacity of a cast in situ bored R.C.

C pile of
diameter 20 inch & length 50 foot in homogeneous sand layer. The top of pile at 10 foot
below the ground surface. Unit weight of at saturated condition 120 pcf and angle of internal
friction 30 . Water table is at the ground surface. [BWDB-14]

Problem-02: Following are the results of a shrinkage test:

Weight of shrinkage dish = 14.5 g
Weight of shrinkage dish with wet soil = 42 g
Weight of shrinkage dish with oven dried soil = 33 g
Weight of mercury which is full into shrinkage dish = 222.5 g
Weight of mercury which was displaced by dry soil pat = 117 g
If the unit weight of mercury is 13.6 g/ , calculate the shrinkage limit and volumetric
shrinkage for the soil specimen.
Solution:
Weight of wet soil, = 42 – 14.5 = 27.5 g
Weight of oven dried soil, = 33 – 14.5 = 18.5 g
Volume of wet soil, = = = 16.36

Volume of oven dried soil, = = = 8.6

Problem-01: 25 ml of sewage sample was seeded dilution in 300 ml of BOD bottle. The
seeded water contains D.O at the beginning and at the end of the test were respectively 3.7
ppm and 2.6 ppm. The value of initial dissolved oxygen of the mixed solution was calculated
8.7 ppm and after incubator at 20 for 5 days dissolved oxygen of the mixed solution was
found 3.7 ppm. Calculate the 5 days BOD for the sewage.
Solution:

= = 47.9 ppm Answer
Alternative solution:
D.F = = 12
= 1)
⇒ = 1)
= 47.9 ppm Answer
Problem-02: Initial dissolved oxygen and final dissolved oxygen is 7 ppm and 3 ppm
respectively for three days B.O.D analysis of sewage from an ice cream factory located at
Gazipur sadar at a temperature of 20 . Determine the ultimate BOD and five days BOD.
Assume the rate of reaction is 0.2 .
Solution:

= 8.88 ppm Answer
And,
= (1 )
⇒ = (1 )
= 5.61 ppm Answer
Problem-02: Water flows along a rectangular channel at a depth 17. 33 cm when the
discharge is 7020.5 cusec. The channel wide is 25 cm, the same as the weir. Ignoring energy
losses, what is the minimum height (P) of a broad crested weir if it is too functional with
critical depth on the crest? [Janata Bank-17]
Solution:
Given data, Q = 7020.5 cusec, b = 25 cm, = 17. 33 cm

+ =P+ + ……………….. (1)

Q= = 7020.5 = (17. 33 25) ⇒ 16.204 cm/sec
=√ =√ = 4.315 cm
Q= = 7020.5 = (4.315 25) ⇒ 65.067 cm/sec
+ = P + 4.315 +
= 11 cm Answer
