Zero Gravity Parabolic Flight Reflection

During this semester during Math 1010, we learned about many different mathematical

concepts and their applications. One of the projects we did was analyzing data pertaining to zero

gravity simulations used in training astronauts for space travel. We learned how to analyze and

interpret data, plot graphs, create formulas by manipulating data with matrices, as well as

matching physical events and their mathematical representations. Below are some reflections

about our learning as the project was done.

Performing this project as part of my math class really put into perspective how math is

applied in the real world. I particularly enjoyed working on this project due to the clarity of how

the analysis represents the data. The formula we created allows for knowing exactly which

trajectory the aircraft will take. This is very important to a pilot, as well as those on the ground in

case something goes wrong. It can also help optimize resources to perform the flight. The better

prepared the astronauts are, the more successful the space mission that comes after will be.

Quadratic equation analysis has many applications, and aeronautical endeavors are not

the only kind. When I was in seventh grade, we built rockets with water bottles. It would have

been very interesting if we had the means to analyze the flight trajectory of the rockets. Even if

we only did that in a school setting, it serves more than just the purpose of data analysis, as there

are many other skills involved, which can translate into many disciplines, just like mathematical

analysis.
Another example that was particularly interesting to me was the analysis of how a

patient’s temperature reading was affected by time. Even more interesting was the example

dealing with medication concentration in a patient’s bloodstream. My twin sister has a chronic

condition and takes very strong pain killers that work but sometimes with a delay. We as a family

informally keep track of the severity of her pain by how long it takes for the medication to work

based on her discomfort. Having a detailed analysis of this could help her doctors adjust

medication as necessary.

If I were a business owner and a manager brought me the results of the lab, it would be

absolutely imperative that she be clear and transparent about the process to justify her

conclusions. I might not doubt the manager’s abilities, but mistakes can happen and two heads

are always better than one. A small oversight might make the whole lab invalid, potentially

wasting resources, monetary and of other kinds. On the other hand, I could have a dishonest

employee that might attempt to manipulate data due to some hidden motive.

I already know math is useful, so performing this project did not change my opinion

regarding the usefulness of math. It did cement what I believe. I have several friends that work in

the sciences: genetics, astronomy, chemistry, engineering, medicine. I always have very

interesting conversations with them, but I feel with this lab I gained a better understanding of one

of the applications for mathematics in their daily work. The various examples we worked on

during class did broaden my mind to the reach of how the same operation is applied to different

processes.
