Question 1

a) A gas compressor compresses gas adiabatically from 1 bar and 150C to 10 bar with an isentropic
efficiency of 0.89 .The gas flow rate is 5kg/s. Calculate the temperature after compression and
the power input. Take Cv=718J/kgk and Cp=1005J/kgk.
b) Steam is expanded adiabatically in a turbine from 100 bar and 6000c to 0.09 bar with an
isentropic efficiency of 0.88.The mass flow rate is 4okg/s. Calculate the enthalpy at exit and the
power output

Question 2

a) A passout turbine plant works as shown in fig below. The boiler produces steam at 60 bar and
5000 C which is expanded through two stages of turbines. The first stage expands to 3 bar where
4 kg/s of steam is removed. The second stage expands to 0.09 bar . The isentropic efficiency is
0.9 for the overall expansion. Assume that the expansion is a straight line on the h - s chart. The
condenser produces saturated water. The makeup water is supplied at 1bar and 200 C. The
isentropic efficiency of the pumps is 0.8. The net power output of the cycle is 40 MW. Calculate:
i) the flow rate of steam from the boiler.
ii) the heat input to the boiler.
iii) the thermal efficiency of the cycle.

Questions 3

a) Steam at a pressure of 10 bar and 300°C is delivered to the throttle of an engine. The steam
expands to 3 bar when release occurs. The steam exhaust takes place at 1 bar. A performance
test gave the result of the specific steam consumption of 12 kg/kWh and a mechanical efficiency
of 80 per cent. Determine :
i) Ideal work or the modified Rankine engine work per kg.
ii) Efficiency of the modified Rankine engine or ideal thermal efficiency.
iii) The indicated and brake work per kg.
iv) The brake thermal efficiency.
v) The relative efficiency on the basis of indicated work and brake work.
