Exploring Federal Police Agencies: Purpose and Scope of Authority

Introduction

There are many federal agencies and courts within the US immigration department that focus on

enforcing US immigration laws (Elnaghi et al. pg 198). After abolishing the naturalization

service by the homeland security act of 2002, the US congress formed Custom and Border

Protection (CBP) and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agencies.

Difference between CBP and ICE

One can easily differentiate the two agencies in that CBP is accountable for enforcing laws

concerning immigration at or close to the margins of the United States. On the other hand, ICE

is in charge of immigration law enforcement inside the United States. The difference is evident

in that CBP conducts inspections and investigations within the border and conducts border

patrol. The agency targets to identify and bound unlawful access into the nations’ entry. Since

the 21st century, CBP is allowed to operate within 100 miles of the US coastal borders. On the

other side, ICE works within the interior of the US. The agency's primary functions include

arresting criminals, managing immigrant detention, and deporting people.

Besides the two agencies being relatively new, I believe that the difference is significant

to justify their separate existence. Theoretically, every group is accountable for managing diverse

immigration enforcement despite the two agencies being monitored by Homeland Security. CBP

major on implementation at the border while ICE major on the requirement in the interior.

To conclude, the two immigration agencies CBP and ICE, play a critical role in the US's

safety from illegal immigrants. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the two agencies through

educating law enforcers and ensuring the availability of enough resources.
