SOP of Muffle Furnace
1. When using the Muffle Furnace make sure the exhaust fans are turned on to exhaust out any
harmful fumes during furnace operation.

2. The furnace requires 15 minutes of warm-up before use to reach the desired temperature of
550 degrees Celsius.

3. Items to be placed in the Muffle Furnace should be first placed in the ceramic crucibles, which
are properly rated to withstand the extreme temperatures of the furnace.

4. Before placing any items within the furnace, TURN OFF the furnace and UNPLUG it to
protect from the potential for electrical shock. Once the furnace is off and unplugged, open the
furnace door by lifting the door handle up to unlatch it and then pull it down and swing the door
open. Use the metal tongs located along side the furnace to pick up and gently place the
crucibles with the items inside the furnace. Close and latch the furnace door. Plug the furnace
back in and switch it on.

5. Once the tests/Muffle Furnace operation is complete, turn the switch OFF and UNPLUG the
furnace. Open the furnace door by lifting the door handle up to unlatch it and then pull it down
and swing the door open. Use the metal tongs located along side the furnace to gently remove the
crucibles from within the furnace, place the crucibles within the containment area of the Fume
Hood to cool down for at leas 15 minutes. Close the Muffle Furnace and latch the door shut.
