ARTICULATIONS: LEGATO & STACCATO

LEGATO means smooth and connected. It is often marked by a “slur” connecting the notes. It
signifies that you have to move your finger smoothly, connecting the sound and leaving no gaps
between the notes.

STACCATO means “cut short”. It is marked with a dot below or above the note head. This means you
have to play with a bouncy feeling, hopping from one key to another.
