Short Academic Response #2: Finding Causes/Effects of Major Issues in Fiction

Deadline: Wednesday, July 22 2020 by 11:59 PM on Blackboard

Assignment: Choose a fictional short story that contains a cause of something or an effect of something.
For example, you come across a short story that has a theme of racism and notice that the text subtly
implies what causes racism- upbringing, culture, etc. You may use my suggested short story examples
listed in Blackboard folder or a short story of your choice. Children’s fiction is also a viable option too.
Find something you might enjoy.

Answer each question with a one paragraph response:

1.) What is the short story about?—Summarize the content (Remember, no plagiarism)

2.) What is the cause or effect within this story? Explain with examples from the text. (There may be
multiple causes or effects. Focus on either the causes or the effects, not both.)

3.) What point do you think the author is trying to make in addressing this cause or effect? What’s the
deeper meaning behind this story? How do you think the author actually feels about the issue at hand just
based upon reading this piece? Explain with examples from the text.

Length: 300 to 500 words

Organization: When completed, this assignment will include three paragraphs. You may only use first
person in paragraph 3, eliminate all use of second person in this response. The paragraphs should NOT be
numbered. Use topic sentences, supporting details, and transitions to create well-organized paragraphs.
Your analysis should be clear and free of grammatical errors. Please use an MLA header, heading, Times
New Roman, size 12 font. Your entire paper should be double-spaced.

Citations: Only in-text citations are required.
