Ruhi, PGP35035, Section A Assignment: Airtel Zero

Question. Would net neutrality adversely impact Airtel?

Answer:
Airtel is a Telecom Service provider. Services provided by Airtel are: voice calling, SMS, data service and Airtel
Zero. Airtel Zero is open marketing platform which allowed the customer to access any mobile application at
zero data charge. Data charge is borne by content provider.

Net neutrality Principle: Net neutrality advocated that customer could access any legal content over the
internet. ISP could not prioritise certain content/websites by giving customer access to faster content or of
free of cost or blocking few websites.

Controversies of Airtel Zero and Net neutrality:

Online campaigns opposed Airtel stating that Airtel Zero will narrow the customer choices of content since
carrier is grouped with the internet application and services.
According to these campaigns Airtel Zero discriminated on price and internet speed among the websites.
Airtel Zero thus violated the Net neutrality of providing all the legal websites to the customers without any
discrimination.
Following this controversies, Flipkart one of the top ecommerce platform, removed its application from Airtel
Zero.

View of Airtel on these controversies:

According to Airtel, they provided all the service/content on this platform free of cost thus it did not violate
net neutrality. Moreover, it lowered internet usage cost.

Conclusion:
Airtel clearly violated Net Neutrality principle inspite of their different point of view. App developer will
themselves like to avoid the controversies and not provide its service on the platform. Online Campaign ‘Save
the internet’ will create negative customer view preventing them to use Airtel Zero.
However, Airtel Zero is launched in 2015. Most of the Airtel revenue comes from its data and voice services. So
Airtel Zero might not work for Airtel but other services will continue to increase its revenue.
