Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR
BLECTRIC LIGHTING FITTINGS
FOR DIVISION 2 AREAS

0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution.
on 23 September 1976, after the draft finalized by the Illuminating
Engineering Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electro-
technical Division Council.
0.2 As a result of the extensive development of petrochemical industries,
need has been felt for formulation of Indian Standards for electrical
apparatus with type of protection ‘e’ in order to provide guidance to
manufacturers and approving authorities of these equipment in the
country. As a first step IS : 6381-1972* was published to cover general
requirements of such apparatus. This standard is intended to supplement
it with additional details as far as lighting fittings are concerned.
0.3 In preparing this standard, assistance has been derived from B. S.
4533 : Part 2 : 1969 ‘Electric lighting fittings, details requirements,
Section 2 : 1 Lighting fittings for division 2 areas’, issued by the British
Standards Institution.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS : 2-1960t. The number of significant places retained in the rounded
off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard specifies requirements and tests for electric lighting
fittings for use in Division 2 areas as defined in IS : 5572 ( Part I )-1970:.
The fittings operate with either tungsten filament or electric discharge
lamps ( other than low pressure sodium vapour lamps ) on supply voltages
not exceeding 250 V.

3 .
%A-. -
1.2 This standard does not cover portable electric lighting fittings.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply.

2.1 Division 2 Area - An area within which any flammable or

explosive substance whether gas, vapour or volatile liquid, although
processed or stored, is so well under control that the formation of an
explosive or ignitable concentration in sufficient quantity to constitute. a
hazard is only likely under abnormal conditions.

2.2 Auxiliary Gear - Those items of control gear which are required
for the starting and operation of discharge lamps, for power factor
correction or radio interference suppression.

2.3 Enclosure -The external casing protecting the electrical and

mechanical parts of the apparatus.
2.4 Total Enclosure - A form of enclosure without openings specifically
for ventilation but not necessarily airtight.

2.4.1 Restricted Breathing Enclosure - A total enclosure which is cons-

tructed to restrict the rate of breathing in normal use.
2.4.2 Unrestricted Breathing Enclosure - A total enclosure not designed to
comply with the requirements for restricted breathing.

2.5 Non-sparaking Device - A device which is constructed to eliminate

the risk of occurrence of arcs, sparks and hot spots in normal use.
NOTE - Normal use excludes the removal or insertion of components with the cir_
cuit energized.

2.6 Enclosed Break Lampholder - A lampholder in which, when the

lamp is inserted or removed, electrical contact is made and broken, not
at the lamp cap but in a separate enclosure which forms an extension of
the space in which a lamp is secured in position and which is constructed
to prevent ignition of the surrounding flammable atmosphere.

2.7 Ignition Temperature - It shall be as defined in IS : 7820-1975*.

3. GENERAL AND CONSTRUCTIOJVAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1 General
3.1.1 A complete fitting may comprise a restricted breathing enclosure,
an unrestricted breathing enclosure, or a combination of both. The
lamp shall be totally enclosed.
--- I j’!
*Method oi test for ignition temperatures.
.
--A-B -
4
IS : 8224 - 1976

3.1.2 The requirements relate to complete fittings for use in atmosphere

where the self/auto ignition temperature is not below 200°C.
NOTE - Fittings complying with this standard are not suitable for gases or vapours
having ignition temperature ,below 200°C ( set Appendix A ).

3.1.3 Fittings shall comply with the requirements specified in

IS : 1913-1969* except where otherwise stated.
3.1.4 A lampholder in an unrestricted breathing enclosure shall be of
the enclosed break type. Where a non-sparking lampholder is used, it
shall be housed in a restricted breathing enclosure.
NOTE - Enclosed break type lampholder may be used in either of the VYO.

3.1.5 Luminaires having restricted breathing enclosure, provision shall

be made for the attachment of protective guard.
NOTE - The requirements for protective guards shall be similar to those specified in
IS : 2206 ( Part I )-1962t and IS : 2206 ( Part II )-1976f.
3.1.6 Where a non-sparking lampholder is used, it shall be housed in a
restricted breathing enclosure; in such cases provision shall be made for
the attachment of reflectors and protective guards.
3.1.7 All materials shall be suitable for the operating conditions, with
particular attention being given to any thermoplastic materials. Non-
metallic materials, shall be flame retardant.
3.1.8 Care should be exercised in selection of materials for use in
chemically contaminated atmosphere to ensure that the material is
suitable for use in the particular atmosphere.
3.2 Clearances - The clearance shall be as stated in Table 1.
3.2.1 For luminaires with rated voltages less than 250 V, the voltage
to be taken intd consideration for the calculation of the clearances and
creepages between live parts and earth, shall be the line voltage, even
when the supply neutral is directly connected to earth.
3.3 Creepage Distances - The required lengths of creepage paths are
dependent on the tracking resistance of the insulating material and on
the shape of the surface of the insulating parts. The grading of
materials by comparative tracking index ( see IS : 2824-19645 ) is given in
Table 2. The grading given in this table applies to insulating parts
without ribs or notches on the surface. Where the insulating parts are

provided with ribs or notches in accordance with 3.3.4 the minimum

permissible creepage distances are to be based on those for insulating
materials of one grade higher.

10 percent. The working voltage ( of the system ) may exceed the rated voltage of the
apparatus by an additional 6 percknt.

3.3.2 The provisions given in 3.2.1 are also valid for creepage
distance.
3.3.3 In the measurement of creepage distance and clearances, joints
in composite bodies shall, in general, be regarded as creepage distances
even when they are stuck together or filled up.

3.3.4 Ribs or notches in the surface of insulated parts may only be

taken into consideration as part of the values required by Table 1 if the
ribs or notches are at least 3 mm high or deep and 3 mm broad.

3.3.5 Figure 1 shall be considered when dimensioning the creepage

distances. Figure 1 J is valid only when the component parts of the in-
sulating pieces are tightly inserted with a suitable bonding agent so that
the creepage distance run exclusively over the exterior surface.

3.3.6 The length of joints not sealed shall not be included when
,calculating the creepage distance unless all the parts between which they
run consist of ceramic insulating materials.

3.3.7 If creepage distances are interrupted by metal parts either one

partial path shall be equal to the minimum distance required or the sum
of the partial paths shall be 1.25 times thgf‘tralue given in Table 1.
