5. Write a short main idea of the chapters 1 and 2 from the book “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”.

The story is set in 1784, in the surroundings of the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town (Tarrytown, New York), in
a secluded valley called Sleepy Hollow known for its ghost stories and the haunted environment that
permeates the imagination of its inhabitants and visitors. The most infamous specter of the place is The
Headless Horseman, who is said to be the ghost of a former Hessian soldier who was hit in the head by a
cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American War of Independence. and that "he rides to the
scene of battle in a nocturnal search for his head."

Legend tells the tale of Ichabod Crane, an extremely superstitious Connecticut school teacher who falls in
love with 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the only child of Baltus Van Tassel, a wealthy town farmer, and his
fortune, at the same time. that also pretends the young and tough Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt. One
placid night the ambitious teacher attends a party at the Van Tassels' house. Dance, feast, and listen to the
ghostly tales told by Brom and the rest of the locals, though his sole purpose is to declare himself to Katrina
after the guests leave.

After an unsatisfactory statement, Ichabod rides home through the spooky woods between the Van Tassel
farm and the Sleepy Hollow settlement. As he passes the so-called haunted places, his active imagination is
overwhelmed by the stories of spirits told at the Harvest Festival. At a certain point the Horseman appears. In
a frantic race to the bridge adjacent to the churchyard of the old Dutch valley church, where the ancient Rider
was said to "vanish in a flash of flame and brimstone," Ichabod rode for his life, desperately urging his horse
toward the lower part of the valley. Still, to the pedagogue's horror, the ghoulish spirit reached the bridge,
reared its horse, and flung its decapitated head into the terrified face of Ichabod Crane.

The following night, Ichabod had mysteriously disappeared from the village, allowing Katrina to marry Brom,
who was said to have known too much about the events when the story of Ichabod was told in the village. In
fact, the only items found about the professor's disappearance were his horse, his hat and a mysterious
woman destroyed in that same place.
Although the nature of the Horseman is left open to free interpretation, the story hints that the horseman was
actually Brom (an agile and experienced horseman) in disguise.
