Regret

Regret is a short story written by Kate Chopin. This story was first published in 1897 when it
appeared in Chopin’s Short Story “A Night in Acadia”.

This story is about a single woman’s life. Her name is Mamzelle Aurlie. At the age of fifty,
she did not get married yet, and she had not lived to regret it. One day, her neighbor, Odile,
asked Mamzelle to keep her four children because she needed to go somewhere during two
weeks. Mamzelle did not know how to treat children. At the first time, she had faced some
difficulties about children; however, she was glad enough to learn a few little-mother tricks to
serve children. She began to start loving and caring the children. Unfortunately, at the end of
two weeks, Odile came back and picked up her children. Mamzelle realized that she missed
the day when they were together. She began to cry and regret that she never got married yet
even having a baby.

Based on my own perspective, it is great story. The author described the setting of the story
using nice figurative language. It makes the readers more understand about the feelings and
the situation in the story. On the other hand, the author should add more conflicts when
Mamzelle kept the children. I mean that make it more dramatics.

In sum, this short story is a great story. It tells us about life. We need to open our heart to
accept loving and caring from other people. Life can never be boring if we share each other.
